Rock Of Gibraltar

Bay 1999 16.0 hh (1.62 m)
Danehill - Offshore Boom
Distances won over: 5f to 8f.

Rock Of Gibraltar was a World Champion racehorse. He was a dual Gr.1 winning juvenile and then 5-time Gr.1 winning 3-year-old resulting in him becoming the first horse ever to win 7 consecutive Gr.1’s in the Northern Hemisphere breaking Mill Reef’s 30-year-old record. ‘The Rock’ is from the family of Champion sire Riverman. With 2 crops on the track he is already the sire of 20 Northern Hemisphere SW's including Gr.1 winner Mount Nelson, Gr.2 winners Eagle Mountain and Kitty Matcham and Gr.3 winners Yellowstone, Theann, Utrecht, Unilateral and High Rock.

Fee for 2009: €27,500

The MR. PROSPECTOR line is important, Rock of Gibraltar already has a Gr.3 winner out of a grand-daughter of MISWAKI and Gr.2-placed colt out of a CONQUISTADOR CIELO mare, and his Gr.1 winner Mount Nelson has a FORTY NINER mare as his second dam. Daughters of MACHIAVELLIAN, KINGMAMBO and WOODMAN are among the leading candidates, as are daughters of ZAFONIC.

Grandsons of RAISE A NATIVE sired the dams of Rock of Gibraltar’s very talented sons Yellowstone (EXCLUSIVE ERA) and High Rock (ALYSHEBA).

Rock of Gibraltar appears to be very well suited by the SHARPEN UP line and has already sired the Gr.1 winner Mount Nelson from a SELKIRK mare, the Gr.3 winner Unilateral from a SHARPEN UP mare and the Gr.3 winner Utrecht from a KRIS mare.
Rock of Gibraltar is inbred 3 x 3 to Northern Dancer and he already has a Gr.2 winner and a Gr.1-placed performer out of a SADLER’S WELLS mare, a Listed winner from a BARATHEA mare and an Australian Gr.2 winner from a SCENIC mare. His American Gr.3 winner Sweeter Still is out of a mare inbred 3 x 4 to Northern Dancer, so this filly has four lines to this brilliant Canadian stallion.

Anna’s Rock is out of a mare by NUREYEV’s son ATTICUS, and his smart French son High Rock has a NUREYEV mare as his second dam. Mares from the NIJINSKY branch of the Northern Dancer line are likely to suit Rock of Gibraltar very well, as would daughters of LINAMIX and ALZAO.

One fascinating aspect of Rock of Gibraltar’s record is that he seems to suit inbreeding to DANZIG, with his Eclipse winner Mount Nelson having two lines of Danzig. His Listed winner Roxan is out of a GREEN DESERT mare, while the very useful American colt English Colony is out of a mare by Green Desert’s son OWINGTON.

The NEVER BEND line is particularly interesting in view of the fact that Rock of Gibraltar’s third dam, River Lady, was mated to Never Bend to produce Riverman, an outstanding racehorse and sire. DARSHAAN mares are other likely candidates, and the Gr.2 winner Eagle Mountain has got this cross off to a fine start. Riverman sired the second dams of Utrecht, while his son IRISH RIVER sired the second dam of Anna’s Rock.

He also has very useful winners from daughters of KENMARE, HIGHEST HONOR and KALDOUNEVEES, all members of the GREY SOVEREIGN male line.

Rock of Gibraltar’s Group winner Rock of Rochelle is inbred 4 x 4 to HIS MAJESTY.

The Danzig male line has had some excellent results with mares from the AHONOORA line and Rock of Gibraltar has sired the Gr.3 winner Theann from an INDIAN RIDGE mare.
