The numerous northern hemisphere stakes winners by sons of Danehill provide some hints about which mares will best suit the highly talented Oratorio.

The SHARPEN UP line has been working very well with these sons, just as it did with Danehill himself. There are Group winners out of daughters of SELKIRK (Mount Nelson, Vital Equine and English Ballet), TREMPOLINO (Chelsea Rose), DIESIS (Strategic Prince), KRIS (Elopa and Utrecht), SANGLAMORE (Silver Touch), SHARPO (Soar), FLASH OF STEEL (Lady Dominatrix), SURE BLADE (Anna Pavlova) and SHARP VICTOR (Miss Sally), plus a Listed winner out of a daughter of BEVELED.

Oratorio is also likely to prove a valuable match for mares from the SADLER’S WELLS male line. Danehill has sired Peeping Fawn, Horatio Nelson, Irresistible Jewel, Five Dynasties and Alexander of Hales from daughters of Sadler’s Wells, while his sons have sired the Gr.1 winner Passage of Time, the Gr.2 winner The Kiddykid and the Gr.3 winner Danehill Music. Sons of Danehill are also doing well with grand-daughters of Sadler’s Wells, with the Gr.1 winner Konigstiger being out of a BARATHEA mare and the Gr.3 winners Venturi and Barbajuan being out of daughters of OLD VIC and SADDLERS’ HALL. Danehill’s Gr.1 winners include one out of an IN THE WINGS mare. Danehill’s son Danetime sired two Listed winners from daughters of FAIRY KING.

Danehill sired the dual classic winners Rock of Gibraltar and Desert King from mares by sons of Northern Dancer, namely NUREYEV and BE MY GUEST, plus the top Australian sprinter Exceed And Excel from a LOMOND mare. Danehill’s sons are making their mark with mares by sons of NUREYEV, notably siring the Arc winner Rail Link from a THEATRICAL mare and stakes winners from mares by ATTICUS, LEAD ON TIME and POLAR FALCON. There are already stakes winners by sons of Danehill out of mares by BE MY GUEST and his sons MOST WELCOME and DOUBLE BED. Mares by NIGHT SHIFT have produced stakes winners to Mozart and Tiger Hill. Danehill also had several stakes winners with LYPHARD in their pedigree, including the Gr.1 winner Aquarelliste and the French 2,000 Guineas winner Aussie Rules.

Mares with NIJINSKY blood often brought out the best in Danehill, producing such as Banks Hill, Dansili, Cacique, Intercontinental, Indian Danehill, Punctilious, Spartacus and Catcher In The Rye. Mares by sons of Nijinsky, such as CAERLEON, GREEN DANCER, KINGS LAKE, NINISKI and ROYAL ACADEMY are well worth trying, especially as GREEN DANCER mares have stakes winners by Danehill Dancer and Dansili and a CAERLEON mare has a Gr.3 winner by Danehill Dancer. Daughters of KAHYASI also appeal. It was a mare by Nijinsky’s son SKY CLASSIC who produced Danehill Dancer’s classic winner Speciosa.

The STORM BIRD line is an option for Danehill’s sons. There is a Gr.3 winner out of a STORM BIRD mare, a stakes winner from a BLUEBIRD mare and a Gr.1 winner out of a CATRAIL mare. The NEVER BEND line also merits plenty of consideration. The outstanding Australian mare Makybe Diva is out of a RIVERMAN mare, while the 2007 Prix Morny winner Myboycharlie is out of a mare by Riverman’s son ROUSILLON. Riverman sired the second dam of Danehill’s classic winner Landseer, whereas Irish River sired the second dam of the Gr.1 winner Aquarelliste. Mozart’s Middle Park Stakes winner Amadeus Wolf is out of a mare by MARK OF ESTEEM (by Darshaan). Danehill’s Gr.1 winners included the Derby winner North Light, out of a RAINBOW QUEST mare, and Light Jig, out of a BLUSHING GROOM mare.

Mares which reinforce the RIBOT blood in Danehill’s pedigree are also well worth trying, as he had several Group winners inbred to Ribot, including Mozart and Royal Dragon. Mozart in turn has sired the Middle Park Stakes winner Amadeus Wolf from a mare with another line of Ribot, through ALLEGED. Danehill had two Gr.2 winners, Actrice and Simple Exchange, out of mares by ALLEGED.

ROBERTO sired the dam of Danehill’s Gr.1 winner Punctilious and Roberto’s son KRIS S. is the broodmare sire of Ivan Denisovich. Mares by LEAR FAN have produced Group winners to Danehill Dancer and Desert King.

The FORLI line is also worth trying. There are stakes horses by sons of Danehill out of mares by GAY FANDANGO (Mr. Dinos), THATCHING, TIROL and EFISIO. The speedy TUDOR MINSTREL branch is another option.

Danehill Dancer has sired the high-class colts Monsieur Bond and Indesatchel from daughters of SONG and PETORIUS. MR. PROSPECTOR line mares should suit Oratorio. Danehill sired the high-class juveniles Flying Spur, Rumplestiltskin and Admiralofthefleet from daughters of Mr. Prospector. Danehill also sired Gr.1 winners from mares by Mr. Prospector’s sons MISWAKI, MACHIAVELLIAN and CONQUISTADOR CIELO.

Sons of Danehill are also working well with WOODMAN mares, siring the Gr.1 winner Alexander Tango and the Gr.1-placed Proviso. ZAFONIC mares are also serious contenders, as they produced Zambezi Sun to Dansili and Fast Company to Danehill Dancer.

The AHONOORA line is another with obvious potential, as sons of Danehill have stakes winners out of daughters of AHONOORA, DON’T FORGET ME, DR. DEVIOUS and INDIAN RIDGE.
