Night Shift

Bay 1980 15.3 hh (1.60 m)
Northern Dancer - Ciboulette

Distance won over: 6f.

Night Shift is a proven top-class sire by Northern Dancer. He has stamped himself as a consistent source of high-class performers including Gr.1 winners Azamour, In The Groove, Darayba, Lochangel, Night Style etc. He is now also establishing himself as a productive broodmare sire, with his descendants including the lightning-quick Dandy Man, Sundrop, Etlaala etc. He is proven value.

Fee for 2008: € 15,000

Night Shift has sired Group winners from daughters of at least 25 different broodmare sires, so he is very versatile. MILL REEF crops up as the sire of the dam of Just Happy and of the second dam of Midnight Legend. His sons SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, DOYOUN, GLINT OF GOLD and REFERENCE POINT all figure as the broodmare sire of good winners by Night Shift. Shirley Heights’ son DARSHAAN is the broodmare sire of Night Shift’s promising 2007 2-y-o Going Public and the Listed winner Zelanda. Darshaan also sired the second dam of Night Shift’s best son, Azamour. The fast Advanced also has a dam from the Shirley Heights male line.

Some of Night Shift’s stakes winners are inbred 2x4 to Northern Dancer, with Nipping and Deportivo’s second line of Northern Dancer coming via NIJINSKY, while the second lines in Nyramba and Sheppard’s Watch come via NUREYEV.
Mares with BUSTED blood must be given strong consideration. In The Groove's second dam is by Busted, while Daryaba’s is by a son of Busted. Busted mares have produced the Gr.1 performers Nicolotte and Eveningperformance. There’s also a Listed winner out of a BUSTINO mare.

Night Shift has sired several useful winners from HABITAT mares and his Group winners Creaking Board, Dakhla Oasis, Dyhim Diamond and Northern Goddess are out of mares by Habitat’s sons HOMING and HITTITE GLORY. Another branch of the Turn-to line, the HAIL TO REASON/ROBERTO branch, also commands respect, now that a LEAR FAN mare has produced the outstanding Azamour.

Mares by sons of BOLD RULER have produced the very good fillies Listening and Ascension. A grandson of Bold Ruler is the broodmare sire of Omaha City. More mares from the SECRETARIAT and BOLD LAD (IRE) branches of the Bold Ruler line would be a good idea, especially as Night Shift’s very smart daughters Scarlet Runner and Tashawak are respectively out of mares by PERSIAN BOLD and his son PENNINE WALK.

RED GOD, another son of Nasrullah, also crops up frequently. GREEN GOD is the sire of the dam of a Listed winner and of the second dam of three Group winners, while Lady Alexander’s broodmare sire, SANDHURST PRINCE, is another member of the Red God line. BLUSHING GROOM mares should work well, as the Gr.2 winner Little Treasure is out of a mare by his son SILLERY. There were also Listed winners out of daughters of GROOM DANCER and RAINBOW QUEST.

DERRING-DO is sire of the second dam of Barboukh; his son HIGH TOP is the broodmare sire of In The Groove; and his grandson PYJAMA HUNT is sire of the dam of The Happy Valley.

ELA-MANA-MOU is the broodmare sire of two of Night Shift’s North American Grade 2 winners, Plicck and Moon Solitaire.
ALLEGED and his son LAW SOCIETY are the broodmare sires of stakes winners, with the Gr.1 winner Night Style being one of the winners out of Law Society mares.
