Hurricane Run

Bay 2002 16 hh (1.63 m)
Montjeu - Hold On
Distance won over: 9f. to 12f.

World champion of 2005 and 4-time Group 1 winner. One of only 7 horses to ever win both the ‘Arc’ and ‘King George’, the others include the outstanding sires Ribot, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave and Montjeu. Hurricane Run is the best son of Montjeu and a half-brother to  a Gr.3 winner. His dam was Stakes placed over 9f. and is a half-sister to 5 Group winners. His broodmare sire Surumu won the German Derby-Gr.1 and was Champion sire in Germany 6 times.

Fee for 2009: €20,000

Hurricane Run followed in the footsteps of his brilliant sire Montjeu, with both winning the Irish Derby, Arc, Tattersalls Gold Cup and King George. Expect him also to follow his sire’s example as a stallion.

SHARPEN UP is very much a path to follow with Montjeu and Hurricane Run, as SHARPEN UP sired the second dams of Motivator and Hurricane Run. What’s more, Montjeu’s Derby runner-up Walk In The Park has a second dam sired by Sharpen Up’s son KRIS. Mares by sons and grandsons of SHARPEN UP would only result in 4x3 and 4x4 inbreeding with Hurricane Run. It’s worth remembering that DIESIS also excelled with Galileo, in the form of the St. Leger winner Sixties Icon, also High Chaparral’s grandam is by KRIS.

Sadler’s Wells has sired Group winners from mares by Raise A Native’s sons MR. PROSPECTOR, ALYDAR, EXCLUSIVE NATIVE and PRINCELY NATIVE. Montjeu has sired the Derby-winning Motivator from a GONE WEST mare and the Gr.2 winner Papal Bull from a ZAFONIC mare. Montjeu also has black-type earners out of mares by Gone West’s brother LION CAVERN, MISWAKI, MISWAKI TERN, WOODMAN, HANSEL, MUJTAHID. This is relevant to Hurricane Run as his dam’s Group-winning half-brother Hondero is by Damister, a son of MR. PROSPECTOR.

The RIBOT line merits consideration with Hurricane Run. Sadler’s Wells’ four Group winners out of ALLEGED mares include Classic winners Dream Well and Brian Boru. Montjeu already has a classic winner, Scorpion, out of a mare by Alleged’s son LAW SOCIETY. This ties in nicely with Hurricane Run’s pedigree as his Group-winning half-brother Hibiscus is by LAW SOCIETY.

Mares from the NEVER BEND line have excelled with Sadler’s Wells, so it isn’t surprising that Montjeu already has stakes winners out of mares by SHIRLEY HEIGHTS (Gr.1 and Gr.2 winners) and DARSHAAN (3 Listed winners). The Gr.1-placed 2-y-o Dash To The Top has a daughter of MILL REEF as her second dam, and so does Montjeu’s son Stagelight, winner of the Gr.3 UAE 2000 Guineas on dirt.

Sadler’s Wells’ outstanding record with HABITAT mares makes Hurricane Run an automatic choice for mares with Habitat blood and for other mares from the TURN-TO line.

Stallions from the Grey Sovereign line are already cropping up frequently among Montjeu’s black-type horses, including KALAMOUN (sire of the second dam of Scorpion), his sons BIKALA and KENMARE and his grandson KENDOR (broodmare sire of the Gr.1 winner Corre Caminos). Consequently they should work just as effectively with Hurricane Run.

The BLUSHING GROOM line is potentially very important to Hurricane Run. Montjeu sired the Epsom Derby winner Authorized from a mare by SAUMAREZ, a son of RAINBOW QUEST. NASHWAN and MARIGNAN, both sons of BLUSHING GROOM, are the broodmare sires of Montjeu’s Gr.1 placed 2-y-o’s, Dash To The Top and Chinese Whisper. 2006 Singapore Derby-Gr.1 winner Our Falstaff is out of a mare by a grandson of BLUSHING GROOM.

There is plenty of scope for Hurricane Run to cover mares by grandsons of Northern Dancer, creating only 4x4. It works for Montjeu as LYPHARD appears as the sire of the second dam of Authorized, while his sons PHARLY and BELLYPHA sired the second dams of two other Gr.1 winners, Montare and Corre Caminos.
