High Chaparral

1999 Bay 16.0½ hh (1.63 m)
Sadler's Wells - Kasora

Distance won over: 7f. to 12f.

High Chaparral was a exceptional racehorse. By the end of his outstanding career he had recorded 6 Gr.1 wins (just like Champion sire Montjeu) at 2, 3 and 4 years over 8, 10 and 12 furlongs including 2 Derby’s, 2 Breeders’ Cup Turfs, an Irish Champion Stakes, and the Racing Post Trophy. High Chaparral is a son of sire of sires Sadler’s Wells, just like sensational young sires Montjeu and Galileo.

Fee for 2009: €10,000

High Chaparral is one of SEVEN Gr.1 winners that Sadler’s Wells has sired from daughters of Darshaan. There are also THIRTEEN Group winners by Sadler’s Wells out of mares by Darshaan’s sire Shirley Heights, including the proven sire IN THE WINGS. In The Wings’ stallion record suggests that High Chaparral will be suited by mares from a wide variety of male lines. In The Wings has done particularly well with the SHARPEN UP male line, siring Group winners from mares by four different sons of Sharpen Up and one grandson. These stallions are DIESIS (broodmare sire of the Gr.1 winner Zanzibar), SANGLAMORE (the Gr.1 winner Fidelite), SELKIRK (Gr.2 winner Weightless), KRIS and Kris’s son COMMON GROUNDS (the Gr.1 winner Soldier Hollow). Significantly, Sadler’s Wells’ stakes winners out of daughters of KRIS include the Oaks winner Moonshell and her first-rate brother Doyen, and he also has a Gr.1 winner out of a SELKIRK mare and a Gr.2 winner from a SHARPEN UP mare. Galileo has sired the classic-winning Sixties Icon from a mare by Kris’s brother DIESIS.

Even though In The Wings was out of a grand-daughter of MILL REEF, this didn’t stop him doing well with mares with NEVER BEND blood. His exciting 2007 2-y-o McCartney is inbred 3x4 to SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, while his Gr.2 winner Annaba and his 2007 German Derby winner Adlerflug are respectively inbred 4x2 and 4x4 to MILL REEF.

Predictably in view of the widespread success that Sadler’s Wells has enjoyed with HABITAT mares, In The Wings also did well with them and with mares from other branches of the TURN-TO line, siring Tillerman from a ROBERTO mare and Singspiel from a HALO mare.

In The Wings also has Group winners out of mares by three sons of BLUSHING GROOM. In The Wings sired the St. Leger second Air Marshall from a mare by Petingo’s son TROY, plus the Group winners Earlene and New South Wales from mares by Petingo’s grandson ELA-MANA-MOU. Sadler’s Wells has also sired Group winners from daughters of TROY, ENGLISH PRINCE and ELA-MANA-MOU.

Mares with TOP VILLE blood are other prime contenders. They produced two Gr.1 winners to Sadler’s Wells, including the exceptional Montjeu, and two Group winners to In The Wings, including the Irish Derby winner Winged Love.

Mares by MR. PROSPECTOR and his many high-class sons are also likely to suit High Chaparral. Sadler’s Wells has enjoyed classic success with mares by MISWAKI and GULCH, while In The Wings sired the Italian 2000 Guineas winner Davide Umbro from a daughter of AFLEET and the Gr.1 winner Mamool from a daughter of WOODMAN.

Breeders can also be confident that inbreeding to NORTHERN DANCER through High Chaparral will also pay dividends. In The Wings has several inbred Group winners, such as Trumbaka and the Italian Oaks winner Zanzibar. The Gr.1 winner Soldier Hollow is inbred 3x5x5.

The Bold Ruler branch of the Nasrullah line has supplied several Group winners by Sadler’s Wells, with BOLD RULER, SECRETARIAT, GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SUCCESSOR, FOOLISH PLEASURE and AUCTION RING among the broodmare sires. BOLD LAD (IRE) sired the second dam of two Group winners by In The Wings.

ALLEGED mares would also be suitable, as Sadler’s Wells has an excellent record with his daughters. His four Group winners out of Alleged mares include Dream Well, winner of the French Derby and Irish Derby, and Brian Boru, winner of the St. Leger. Alleged’s son LAW SOCIETY is another option, as his daughters have produced Gr.1 winners to two sons of Sadler’s Wells, including the top-class Scorpion.
