Hawk Wing

Hawk Wing has the attraction of having a pedigree which is pretty much an outcross to Northern Dancer, who will be back in the fifth generation of his foals’ pedigrees. His sire Woodman has done very well with mares by sons of NORTHERN DANCER, siring Group/Graded winners from daughters of DANCING COUNT, DANZIG (three), EL GRAN SENOR, FAR NORTH, LYPHARD, NUREYEV, THE MINSTREL and VICEREGAL, as well as Nijinsky. Lyphard’s son ALZAO is the broodmare sire of the first two Hawk Wings to earn black type, so more ALZAO mares are called for. Hawk Wing’s early winners include one out of a CAERLEON mare, which is inbred 4x3 to NIJINSKY.

Mares by SADLER’S WELLS must also be given a chance, as Sadler’s Wells sired the Gr.1 winner Poliglote from few matings with mares by Hawk Wing’s broodmare sire Val de l’Orne. Daughters of FAIRY KING and BE MY GUEST must also be contenders, along with mares by Northern Dancer’s numerous top-class grandsons, such as BARATHEA. Prime candidates must be DANEHILL, who will create 4x5 to Buckpasser and 5x4 to Northern Dancer, GREEN DESERT and DANEHILL DANCER.

Mares with NEVER BEND blood produced the exceptional performers Bosra Sham, Hector Protector and Mujtahid to Woodman, so they must be considered for Hawk Wing, especially daughters of DOYOUN, SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, DARSHAAN and MARK OF ESTEEM.

RAINBOW QUEST is another member of the Nasrullah male line who should suit (he creates 4x5 to Raise A Native). SEATTLE SLEW and his sire BOLD REASONING are other members of the Nasrullah male line which have done well with Woodman. The other BOLD RULER lines which are proven with Woodman include BOLD BIDDER and BOLD LAD (IRE).
With inbreeding to MR. PROSPECTOR beginning to appear in more and more good winners, it is interesting that breeders have sent Hawk Wing daughters of KINGMAMBO, creating 3x3 inbreeding, and ZAFONIC, creating 3x4. Of Woodman’s winners, Lismore Knight, Sue’s Good News, Mahogany Hall and Mujtahid are all closely inbred to RAISE A NATIVE through EXCLUSIVE NATIVE, EASY GOER, MAJESTIC LIGHT and his son MAJESTIC PRINCE respectively.

The PRINCEQUILLO line appears in Woodman’s better runners through SPEAK JOHN, DEDICATE and ROUND TABLE, while the RIBOT line is represented through KEY TO THE MINT and GRAUSTARK. The TURN-TO line is represented in the better Woodmans by ROBERTO, SIR GAYLORD, CYANE, SIR TRISTRAM and HALO.

IN REALIY is close up in the pedigrees of Chiselling, Sue’s Good News, Shell Ginger and Illusioned, suggesting that sires from this line, like WARNING, are worthy mates for Hawk Wing.
