Dylan Thomas

Bay 2003 16.2 hh (1.68 m)
Danehill - Lagrion
Distances won over: 7f. to 12f.

A 6-time Group One winner and the best horse Kieren Fallon ever rode. He's bred on a similar Danehill/Sharpen Up cross as exceptional sire Danehill Dancer. Probably the best horse ever by sire of sires Danehill. And he's a half-brother to the brilliant European Champion 2yo filly Queen's Logic.

"Dylan Thomas became the first horse in 35 years of records to run every month from April to September and then win an Arc. That is but part testament to his abilities." Alastair Down, Racing Post, 8th October 2007.

Fee for 2008: € 50,000

Dylan Thomas amassed a magnificent record of six Gr.1 victories, displaying rare toughness and consistency. Together with the highly successful stallion Danehill Dancer, he represents the very fruitful partnership that Danehill enjoyed with mares from the Sharpen Up line. Danehill Dancer’s career offers plenty of clues about the broodmare sires likely to suit Dylan Thomas. Two of Danehill Dancer’s first crop stakes winners were inbred to NORTHERN DANCER, with the second line coming through BE MY GUEST. This ties in with the record of Danehill, who sired the great Rock of Gibraltar from a BE MY GUEST mare and Danetime from a grand-daughter of BE MY GUEST. Sons of Danehill also have Listed winners out of mares by Be My Guest’s sons DOUBLE BED and MOST WELCOME.

Dylan Thomas should prove a very suitable mate for mares from the SADLER’S WELLS line. Danehill Dancer’s first two foals out of Sadler’s Wells’ daughters are the smart filly Salut d’Amour and the Gr.3 winner Danehill Music, while his Group-winning juveniles Barbajuan and Venturi are out of daughters of OLD VIC and SADDLERS’ HALL. Other sons of Danehill have sired Gr.1, Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners from Sadler’s Wells mares. Daughters of ENTREPRENEUR, GALILEO, IN THE WINGS, KING OF KINGS and MONTJEU are therefore candidates for Dylan Thomas. He also merits a chance with mares by FAIRY KING. Danehill Dancer also has above-average winners out of mares by Nureyev’s sons LEAD ON TIME and SOVIET STAR. Daughters of POLAR FALCON and PIVOTAL could suit, as Danehill did well with Nureyev.

Dylan Thomas can be expected to suit mares with the Nijinsky blood which worked so well with Danehill. Danehill Dancer sired the 1000 Guineas winner Speciosa from a mare by Nijinsky’s son SKY CLASSIC, and he also sired Decado from a mare by GREEN DANCER and Good Mood from a daughter of CAERLEON. Dylan Thomas is also likely to be suited by mares by ROYAL ACADEMY, NINISKI and KAHYASI. The STORM BIRD branch is likely to suit, as Danehill Dancer has a smart performer out of a daughter of BLUEBIRD and the Gr.1 winner Miss Beatrix out of a mare by STORM CAT’s son CATRAIL.

Dylan Thomas’s grandsires Danzig and Diesis both did well with Ribot blood, so mares by ALLEGED and LAW SOCIETY are possibilities. Danehill has two Gr.2 winners out of mares by Alleged, who also sired the second dam of the 1,000 Guineas winner Speciosa. Danehill Dancer’s Gr.2 winner Silent Times is inbred 4x4 to Ribot’s son HIS MAJESTY, and this type of inbreeding also occurs in some of Danehill’s Group winners, with His Majesty’s brother GRAUSTARK also playing his part. Mares by PLEASANT COLONY would be interesting.

Judging by Danehill Dancer’s results, inbreeding to SHARPEN UP is an option, especially as Sharpen Up is one generation further back in Dylan Thomas’s pedigree. Mares by KRIS, SELKIRK, TREMPOLINO and SHARPO therefore have to be seriously considered. They create 4x3 to Sharpen Up. Dylan Thomas is also likely to emulate his sire’s success with mares by sons of MR. PROSPECTOR. Danehill Dancer sired the Gr.1-winning Alexander Tango from a WOODMAN mare and Dansili’s promising daughter Proviso is out of another. GONE WEST’s son ZAFONIC sired the dam of Danehill Dancer’s Gr.3 winner Fast Company and also the dam of Dansili’s Gr.1 winner Zambezi Sun. MACHIAVELLIAN mares would be interesting in view of the success his son Medicean has had with Danehill mares.

Danehill sired a Gr.1 winner from a ROBERTO mare, plus very smart performers from mares by three sons of ROBERTO, including one from a LEAR FAN mare. Danehill Dancer sired the Group-winning Drumfire from a LEAR FAN mare.
Fast Nasrullah blood would also be a good match. Danehill sired Gr.1 winners from mares by BLUSHING GROOM and RAINBOW QUEST, while Danehill Dancer sired the smart Jeremy from a mare by Blushing Groom’s son ARAZI. NASHWAN mares have two above-average performers by Danehill Dancer.

THATCHING mares have done well with Danehill and Danehill Dancer. Another fast branch of the Hyperion male line – the SING SING branch – supplied Danehill Dancer with two of his best winners - the very smart sprinter Monsieur Bond (out of a SONG mare) and the very smart miler Indesatchel (out of a PETORIUS mare). Mares by CADEAUX GENEREUX and EFISIO are other attractive options, with Cadeaux Genereux producing 4x4 to Sharpen Up.

Danehill had Gr.1 winners from mares with MILL REEF, SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, DARSHAAN, SIMPLY GREAT, RIVERMAN and IRISH RIVER in their pedigree. Danehill Dancer’s Gr.1 winner Alexander Tango and Gr.3 winner Fast Company respectively have mares by RIVERMAN and MILL REEF as their second dam.
