Choisir

Chestnut 1999 16.0½ hh (1.63 m)
Danehill Dancer - Great Selection
Distance won over: 5f. to 6f.

Choisir will be remembered in history as a racing legend. He was an Australian Champion at 2. At 3 Choisir was a global sprinting sensation. In Australia he was again a Champion and the winner of the Gr.1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington. Within the space of 5 days at Royal Ascot, England Choisir defeated the best that Europe had to offer in the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Gr.2 King’s Stand Stakes. A leading 2nd crop sire with nearly 40 winners including stakes winners Stimulation, Choose Your Moment, Fat Boy, Luna Nel Pozzo, Porto Marmay.

Fee for 2008: € 12,500

Choisir’s physique, bloodlines and racing record all suggested that he had the makings of a highly effective sire of 2-y-o’s and sprinter-milers, and this is coming to fruition, as witnessed by his impressive totals of 29 first-crop winners and 3 stakes winners. His sire Danehill Dancer won the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes and Gr.1 National Stakes at 2, and his broodmare sire Lunchtime was unbeaten at two, when he took the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes. Biscay, the sire of Choisir’s second dam, was twice champion sire of 2-y-o’s in Australia.

Mares by AHONOORA, INDIAN RIDGE and INCHINOR look a sure-fire means of producing smart juveniles and sprinters, as Danehill sired three Group winners from Ahonoora mares.

Choisir already has two stakes winners out of mares by sons of Northern Dancer, namely NIGHT SHIFT and NORDICO. Mares by SADLER’S WELLS and his sons should also suit him well. Danehill Dancer and Danehill have both sired Group winners from mares by BE MY GUEST. The NUREYEV branch of the Northern Dancer line is another attractive option, as are daughters of FAIRY KING. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by ALZAO.

As Danzig will be back in the fourth generation of Choisir’s foals, it could be worthwhile trying this exceptionally sound horse with mares from other branches of the Danzig male line. Choisir’s early winners include one out of a POLISH PATRIOT mare and another out of a GREEN DESERT mare.
The NIJINSKY male line is likely to suit Choisir very well, with mares by CAERLEON, GREEN DANCER, NINISKI, ROYAL ACADEMY, KAHYASI and HERNANDO high on the list.
Danehill Dancer sired the Gr.1 winner Miss Beatrix from a CATRAIL mare. Danehill Dancer has a Gr.3 winner inbred 3x3 to SHARPEN UP and another inbred 3x4 to him, so Choisir remains an option for mares by KRIS, DIESIS, SHARPO, SELKIRK, COLLEGE CHAPEL and COMMON GROUNDS. A BEVELED mare has already produced one of his early winners.

Choisir could also be an interesting match for mares by several MR. PROSPECTOR line stallions, as ZAFONIC is broodmare sire of Danehill Dancer’s top-class juvenile Fast Company.

Forli’s son GAY FANDANGO sired the dam of one of Danehill’s Gr.1 winners, plus the second dam of another Group winner, while Forli’s grandson THATCHING sired the dams of two of Danehill’s Group winners. Two of Danehill Dancer’s good juvenile winners - Dance Night and Lady Lindsey -  are out of mares by THATCHING and another is out of a mare by Thatching’s son TIROL. Daughters of EFISIO are likely to suit him.

Another fast branch of the Hyperion male line - the SING SING branch - has supplied Danehill Dancer with the very smart sprinter Monsieur Bond (out of a SONG mare) and the high-class miler Indesatchel (out of a PETORIUS mare). Choisir’s Gr.2-placed son The Loan Express is out of a mare by a grandson of SING SING.
