Catcher In The Rye is a very well-bred individual whose first three dams all won at two and whose first four dams all developed into high-class Group winners.
Catcher In The Rye’s family has produced a succession of high-class performers by Sadler’s Wells, including the dual Gr.2 winners Wareed and Modhish and the Gr.1 Irish Oaks second Russian Snows, so he is bound to suit mares by SADLER’S WELLS and sons of Sadler’s Wells, such as BARATHEA, ENTREPRENEUR, MONTJEU (sire of the Gr.2 winner Honolulu from this family), GALILEO and IN THE WINGS.
FAIRY KING is another who could suit, as there are three stakes winners by Danetime out of his daughters.
His sire Danehill had two dual classic winners – Rock of Gibraltar and Desert King – out of mares by sons of Northern Dancer. Catcher In The Rye has also sired the classic-winning Rosenreihe from a BE MY GUEST mare, so there is ample scope for further NORTHERN DANCER blood.
NEVER BEND is back in the fifth generation of Catcher In The Rye’s pedigree, through Mill Reef, and it would be interesting to add another line, through RIVERMAN or IRISH RIVER.
Danehill’s Gr.1 winners included the Derby winner North Light, out of a RAINBOW QUEST mare, and Light Jig, out of a BLUSHING GROOM mare.
MR. PROSPECTOR line mares are likely to suit Catcher In The Rye, especially as the Gr.1-winning juvenile Rumplestiltskin has this immortal stallion as her broodmare sire.
Other branches of the NATIVE DANCER line have also excelled with Danehill. ALYSHEBA sired the dam of the brilliant George Washington; AFFIRMED sired the dam of the Gr.1 winner Dress To Thrill; and SHARPEN UP sired the dam of Danehill Dancer. Danehill enjoyed a rewarding relationship with mares from the PETINGO line, siring the Gr.1 winners Westerner and Fine Motion from mares by Petingo’s son TROY. PITCAIRN, another son of Petingo, sired the second dam of the Group winners Danefair, Vortex and Prove, while Pitcairn’s son ELA-MANA-MOU is the broodmare sire of the Gr.3 winners Balestrini and Chiming.
HIGH LINE did particularly well with Danehill, siring the dams of the Gr.2 winner Dane Friendly and the classic-placed Alriffa, plus the second dams of Banks Hill, Dansili, Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees, Promising Lead and Archange d’Or.
Forli’s grandson THATCHING sired the dams of Great Dane and Restructure, and EFISIO is the broodmare sire of Danetime’s Gr.1 winner Bushranger.
VAGUELY NOBLE has also sired the dam of four Group winners, led by Oratorio.
Mares which reinforce the RIBOT blood in Danehill’s pedigree are also well worth trying, as he had several Group winners inbred to Ribot, including the brilliant sprinter Mozart.
The ROBERTO line is also becoming attractive, as Roberto sired the dam of Danehill’s Gr.1 winner Punctilious and Roberto’s son KRIS S. is the broodmare sire of Ivan Denisovich.
