Chesnut 2000 16.1½ hh
Storm Cat - Halory

Distance won over: 7f.

The highest-priced yearling of 2001 at $6,400,000. Won G2 Futurity Stakes in a faster time than subsequent multiple G1 winners Hawk Wing (2001) & Giant’s Causeway (1999). Runner-up in the G1 National Stakes to subsequent G1 2000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend. Bred on same STORM CAT/HALO cross as Harlan, the sire of G1 winners Harlan’s Holiday and Menifee. A leading freshman sire in 2007 with 6 2yo stakes winners including G1 winner Set Play, G2 winner Strike The Deal and G3 winners Onceuponatime and Raymi Coya.

Fee for 2008: US$ 25,000

Bred on same STORM CAT/HALO cross as Harlan, the sire of top-class performers like Harlan's Holiday and Menifee. He has had a sensational start in 2007, with Gr.1 winner Set Play and Gr.2 winner Strike The Deal.

With an American Gr.1 winner and an English Gr.2 winner among his first runners, Van Nistelrooy is clearly living up to his powerful bloodlines, which made him the top-priced yearling of 2001. He has the same 3x3 inbreeding to NORTHERN DANCER that appears in the pedigree of One Cool Cat - one of Europe's leading two-year-olds of 2003.

As his dam Halory has produced Graded winners to MR. PROSPECTOR's sons JADE HUNTER (Gr.2 Blue Grass S. winner Halory Hunter) and PROCIDA (Gr.3 winner Prory), mares from the MR. PROSPECTOR line are obvious candidates for Van Nistelrooy. This would tie in with the tremendous success that Storm Cat and Giant's Causeway have enjoyed with mares by MR. PROSPECTOR and his sons such as FAPPIANO, FORTY NINER, GONE WEST, KINGMAMBO, LYCIUS, MACHIAVELLIAN, SEEKING THE GOLD and WOODMAN.

Van Nistelrooy's first Gr.1 winner, Set Play, has a GONE WEST mare as her second dam, while Gr.2 winner Strike The Deal has MR. PROSPECTOR as the sire of his second dam.

Van Nisterooy is bred on the same Storm Cat/Halo cross as the proven Gr.1 sire Harlan. Van Nistelrooy should suit AFFIRMED mares as Harlan sired multiple Gr.1 winner Harlan's Holiday from one of his daughters.

Van Nistelrooy should also work well with mares from the NASRULLAH line. In view of Storm Cat's considerable success with BLUSHING GROOM and sons BAILLAMONT, CRYSTAL GLITTERS and RAHY, it is no surprise that Van Nistelrooy has sired the Gr.2 winner Strike The Deal from a MT. LIVERMORE mare.

His first Gr.1 winner Set Play is out of a mare inbred to BOLD RULER through BOLD RUCKUS, a son of BOLDNESIAN and SECRETARIAT. SEATTLE SLEW, another son of Boldnesian, has done very well with Storm Cat, and Van Nistelrooy has the potential to match that success. Harlan's dual Gr.1 winner Menifee is out of a NEVER BEND mare. The CARO branch of the Nasrullah line is another that could suit.

As always with the Storm Cat line, HAIL TO REASON's sons ROBERTO and HALO merit serious consideration.
Storm Cat has also proved very successful when crossed with mares by ALYDAR and with mares by DAMASCUS and his son PRIVATE ACCOUNT. The RIBOT line comes into the picture through KEY TO THE MINT (also sire of Van Nistelrooy¹s dual Gr.3-winning half-brother Key Lory) and PLEASANT COLONY.

BROAD BRUSH sired Brushed Halory, a dual Gr.3-winning half-brother to Van Nistelrooy, therefore his daughters could be worth sending to Van Nistelrooy.
