Grand Slam

Bay 1995 16.1 hh
Gone West - Bright Candles

Distance won over: 5.5f. to 9f.

A dual G1-winning juvenile by GONE WEST from the family of ALYDAR. In 2007 his yearlings made up to $600,000. He is the sire of G1 millionaire winners CAJUN BEAT and CAFE OLYMPUS also G2 winners LIMEHOUSE, FIRE SLAM, BALL FOUR and STRONG HOPE.

Fee for 2009: $25,000

Inbreeding to NORTHERN DANCER features in the pedigrees of many of Grand Slam’s Graded winners - Limehouse and Ball Four are inbred 4 x 3 and both Strong Hope and Grand Hombre 4 x 4. Two of his popular yearlings in 2008 are out of mares by Nureyev’s son THEATRICAL.

Grand Slam sired Strong Hope from a DEPUTY MINISTER mare and the 2008 Gr.1 winner Visionaire from a mare by FRENCH DEPUTY. He also has the Gr.2 winner Fire Slam from a SALT LAKE mare. This suggests mares by AWESOME AGAIN, DEHERE, SILVER DEPUTY and TOUCH GOLD.

Grand Slam also represents an opportunity to inbreed to RAISE A NATIVE or MR. PROSPECTOR. Limehouse and Laureldean Gale are inbred 3 x 3 to Mr. Prospector. Café Olympus and Grand Hombre are among those inbred 4 x 4 to Raise A Native. This inbreeding sometimes goes hand in hand with inbreeding to Northern Dancer.

LORD AT WAR mares produced the Gr.3 winner Sprung to Grand Slam and the top-class miler Raven’s Pass to Elusive Quality.
The top-class Strong Hope is inbred 4 x 3 to El Gran Senor’s dam Sex Appeal. Grand Slam’s first stakes winner, Big Score, is out of a mare by COZZENE and his Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Cajun Beat is out of a CURE THE BLUES mare inbred 4 x 3 to Turn-to.
