Starspangledbanner showed great versatility, establishing himself as a top-class performer in two continents, while winning Gr.1 races over 5.5, 6 and 8 furlongs.
Starspangledbanner’s pedigree and conformation will allow breeders to experiment with inbreeding to the great DANEHILL, the many-times champion sire in Europe and Australia. This exceptional stallion, who was inbred 3x3 to Natalma, will be back in the fourth generation of Starspangledbanner’s foals. His sire Choisir already has an Australian Gr.3 winner inbred 3x3, while the Gr.3 winner Ladies Are Forever and her very smart brother Hoof It
are others inbred 3x3. Mares by such as DANETIME, DANSILI, EXCEED AND EXCEL, MOZART, ORATORIO and ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, which create 4x3 to Danehill, could reinforce Starspangledbanner’s speed.
There is also plenty of scope to inbreed to DANZIG through other branches, most notably the GREEN DESERT line, which is already enjoying a rewarding partnership with the Danehill branch. Mares by CAPE CROSS, DESERT PRINCE, DESERT STYLE, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and OASIS DREAM create only 5x4 to DANZIG.
His sire Choisir has stakes winners out of mares by Northern Dancer’s sons NIGHT SHIFT and NORDICO. As mares by NIGHT SHIFT have produced stakes performers to several sons of Danehill, they clearly suit this line. Mares by SADLER’S WELLS and his sons should also suit STARSPANGLEDBANNER. His grandsire Danehill Dancer has numerous black-type performers out of SADLER’S WELLS mares and he has also sired Group winners from mares by five of Sadler’s Wells’ sons, including from mares by four of Sadler’s Wells’ Gr.1 mile-and-a-half winners. Starspangledbanner could be an ideal medium for injecting speed into daughters of MONTJEU, GALILEO, HIGH CHAPARRAL and IN THE WINGS, and his family produced an Australian Gr.2 winner to BARATHEA. Mares by FAIRY KING are another option, as Starspangledbanner’s female line has produced a VRC Oaks second to Fairy King’s son Encosta de Lago.
Choisir has stakes winners out of mares by ALZAO and LINAMIX, so mares with LYPHARD blood should suit.
MARJU mares are an option, as they have produced Group-placed Listed winners to Choisir and Danehill Dancer.
BLUEBIRD is the broodmare sire of Choisir’s talented daughter Select and he also sired the dams of two of Danehill Dancer’s Group performers, plus the second dams of two others. Choisir also has a Gr.2 winner in Australia out of a mare by CATRAIL, a son of STORM CAT. Danehill Dancer sired the Gr.1 winner Miss Beatrix from another CATRAIL mare. Daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND are options from this line, as
Danehill Dancer sired the high-class Planteur from a GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare, and mares by MUJADIL are likely to produce fast juveniles to Starspangledbanner.
Starspangledbanner’s pedigree rules out very few European mares. Mares by AHONOORA, INDIAN RIDGE and INCHINOR look a sure-fire means of producing smart juveniles and sprinters. Choisir’s good daughter Meydan Princess has an AHONOORA mare as her second dam.
SHARPEN UP is so far back in Starspangledbanner’s pedigree that there is no obstacle to sending him mares from this male line, which has worked so well with Danehill and his sons. Mares by KRIS, DIESIS, SHARPO, SELKIRK, COLLEGE CHAPEL and COMMON GROUNDS are among the candidates.
Starspangledbanner’s female line produced the top-class Haradasun, winner of Royal Ascot’s Queen Anne Stakes, to a son of MR PROSPECTOR. He could therefore be an interesting match for mares by several MR PROSPECTOR line stallions, such as MACHIAVELLIAN, LYCIUS, WOODMAN and ZAFONIC (broodmare sire of Choisir’s stakes-winning daughter Meydan Princess and also broodmare sire of Danehill Dancer’s Dewhurst Stakes second Fast Company). HECTOR PROTECTOR, a son of WOODMAN, is the broodmare sire of Choisir’s very useful daughter Choose Me.
The faster members of the BLUSHING GROOM male line represent another option for this top sprinter, including mares by ARAZI, RAHY, SPECTRUM and NOVERRE.
Choisir’s smart son Stimulation is out of a mare by THATCHING, who was also responsible for the dams of several of Danehill Dancer’s black-type performers. Thatching’s son TIROL is the broodmare sire of two of Danehill Dancer’s talented winners. Daughters of EFISIO are another likeable option from this line.
Another fast branch of the Hyperion male line - the SING SING branch - has supplied Danehill Dancer with the very smart sprinter Monsieur Bond (out of a SONG mare) and the high-class miler Indesatchel (out of a PETORIUS mare). One of Choisir’s Gr.2-placed sons, The Loan Express, is out of a mare by a grandson of SING SING, while another, Reckless Reward, has a second dam by MUMMY’S PET.
