Hurricane Run followed in the footsteps of his brilliant sire Montjeu, with both winning the Irish Derby, Arc, Tattersalls Gold Cup and King George. Expect him also to follow his sire’s example as a stallion. Hurricane Run shares the same broodmare sire, Surumu, as the exceptional German stallion Monsun.
The Grey Sovereign branch of the Nasrullah line has helped produce very smart winners to Sadler’s Wells and Montjeu. Mares by KENMARE and RUSTICARO produced Gr.1 winners to Sadler’s Wells and stallions from the Grey Sovereign line are already cropping up frequently among Montjeu’s black-type horses. Montjeu’s third dam Adele Toumignon was by ZEDDAAN and Montjeu has no fewer than nine stakes winners with two lines of Zeddaan in the first five generations of their pedigrees. Among them are Scorpion (St Leger), Corre Caminos (Prix Ganay), Jukebox Jury (Preis von Europa) and Clowance (second in the 2009 Irish St Leger). The stallions involved include KALAMOUN, his sons BIKALA and KENMARE and his grandson KENDOR.
The BLUSHING GROOM line is another branch of the Nasrullah line which is potentially important to Hurricane Run. His highest-priced first-crop yearling, at €520,000 is out of a RAINBOW QUEST mare. Montjeu sired the stunning Derby winner Authorized from a mare by SAUMAREZ, a son of RAINBOW QUEST. NASHWAN and MARIGNAN, both sons of BLUSHING GROOM, are the broodmare sires of Montjeu’s Gr.1 placed 2-y-o’s, Dash To The Top and Chinese Whisper. The Singapore Derby-Gr.1 winner Our Falstaff is out of a mare by PURSUIT OF LOVE, a grandson of BLUSHING GROOM. There is also a Gr.3 winner out of an ARAZI mare and a Listed winner out of a daughter of RAHY.
Mares from the NEVER BEND branch of the Nasrullah line have excelled with Sadler’s Wells, so it isn’t surprising that Montjeu already has two Gr.1 winners out of mares by SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, including the 2009 Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory, and a Gr.2 winner out of a daughter of DARSHAAN. His 2009 two-year-old Gr.2 winner Joshua Tree has a SHIRLEY HEIGHTS mare as his second dam. Hurricane Run has a 240,000gns first-crop yearling out of a DARSHAAN mare.
Montjeu has sired 6 Group winners from grand-daughters of MR. PROSPECTOR, including the Derby-winning Motivator from a GONE WEST mare, the Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire from a WOODMAN mare and the ex-English Australian Gr.1 winner Speed Gifted from a DISTANT VIEW mare. He also has Group winners out of daughters of FORTY NINER and MACHIAVELLIAN, plus the King George second Papal Bull from a ZAFONIC mare. This is relevant to Hurricane Run as his dam’s Group-winning half-brother Hondero is by Damister, a son of MR. PROSPECTOR.
SHARPEN UP is very much a path to follow with Montjeu and Hurricane Run, as SHARPEN UP sired the second dams of Motivator and Hurricane Run. What’s more, Montjeu’s Derby runner-up Walk In The Park has a second dam by Sharpen Up’s son KRIS. Mares by sons and grandsons of SHARPEN UP would only result in 4x3 and 4x4 inbreeding with Hurricane Run. It’s worth remembering that DIESIS also excelled with Galileo, in the form of the St Leger winner Sixties Icon, and that High Chaparral’s grandam is by KRIS. Montjeu’s excellent 2-y-o St Nicholas Abbey is out of a mare by Kris’s son SURE BLADE.
NORTHERN DANCER will be in the fourth generation of Hurricane Run’s progeny, so there is plenty of scope for him to cover mares by grandsons of Northern Dancer, creating only 4x4. LYPHARD appears as the sire of the second dam of Authorized, while his sons PHARLY and BELLYPHA sired the second dams of two other Montjeu Gr.1 winners, Montare and Corre Caminos. LINAMIX, from the LYPHARD male line, is the broodmare sire of the very talented Montmartre. As the Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire has a Northern Dancer mare as his second dam, he is inbred 3x3. STORM CAT line mares could also be interesting, as Montjeu has a Gr.1-placed son out of a mare by MUJADIL and a BLUEBIRD mare produced the Group 2-winning 2-y-o Pollenator to another son of Montjeu.
Montjeu has Group winners out of daughters of DANEHILL and GRAND LODGE (the 2009 Royal Lodge Stakes winner Joshua Tree), so Hurricane Run should suit mares with DANZIG blood.
NIJINSKY’s son CAERLEON sired the Gr.2 winner Hondo Mondo, a half-brother to Hurricane Run’s dam, so this line could be an important one for Hurricane Run as NIJINSKY appears in the pedigrees of some of Montjeu’s better runners, such as Chinese Whisper, Snoqualmie Girl and Snoqualmie Boy.
The RIBOT line merits consideration with Hurricane Run. Sadler’s Wells four Group winners out of ALLEGED mares include the classic winners Dream Well and Brian Boru. It is therefore not surprising that Montjeu already has a classic winner, Scorpion, out of a mare by Alleged’s son LAW SOCIETY. This ties in nicely with Hurricane Run’s pedigree, as his Group-winning half-brother Hibiscus is by LAW SOCIETY.
