ROCK OF GIBRALTAR stood the 2007 season in Japan, so he has no sales yearlings in Europe, however his European two-year-old crop of 2009 has a host of very progressive types among 25 individual winners.
Rock of Gibraltar has sired the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret winner Varenar from a daughter of MR. PROSPECTOR. He already has a Gr.3 winner out of a MACHIAVELLIAN mare and another out of a grand-daughter of MISWAKI and a Gr.2-placed colt out of a CONQUISTADOR CIELO mare. His Gr.1 winners Diamondrella and Mount Nelson have MISWAKI and FORTY NINER mares as their second dam. Grandsons of RAISE A NATIVE sired the dams of Rock of Gibraltar’s very talented sons Yellowstone and High Rock.
Rock of Gibraltar, like Danehill, appears to be very well suited by the SHARPEN UP line and has sired the Gr.1 winner Mount Nelson and the very useful General Eliott from SELKIRK mares, the Gr.3 winner Unilateral from a SHARPEN UP mare and the Gr.3 winner Utrecht from a KRIS mare.
Grand-daughters of NORTHERN DANCER create 4x4x3 with Rock of Gibraltar. His dual 2009 Gr.1 winner Diamondrella is out of mare by DIXIELAND BAND. He also has Gr.3 winner Three Rocks and Gr.2 winner Kitty Matcham from SADLER’S WELLS mares, a Listed winner from a BARATHEA mare and an Australian Gr.2 winner from a SCENIC mare. His American Gr.3 winner Sweeter Still is from a mare inbred 3x4 to Northern Dancer, so this filly has four lines to this brilliant stallion. Anna’s Rock is out of a mare by ATTICUS, a son of Nureyev, and High Rock has a NUREYEV mare as his second dam.
One fascinating aspect of Rock of Gibraltar’s record is that he seems to suit inbreeding to DANZIG, with his Eclipse winner Mount Nelson having two lines of Danzig. His Listed winner Roxan is out of a GREEN DESERT mare, while the very useful American colt English Colony is out of a mare by Green Desert’s son OWINGTON. Roxan was inbred 3x3 to DANZIG and English Colony 3x4, as is the Group-placed Terra Incognita.
The NEVER BEND line is particularly interesting in view of the fact that Rock of Gibraltar’s third dam, River Lady, was mated to Never Bend to produce RIVERMAN, an outstanding racehorse and sire. DARSHAAN is broodmare sire of Gr.1 winner Eagle Mountain. RIVERMAN sired the second dam of Gr.3 winner Utrecht and his son IRISH RIVER sired the second dam of Anna’s Rock.
He also has very useful winners from daughters of KENMARE, HIGHEST HONOR, TONY BIN and KALDOUNEVEES, all members of the GREY SOVEREIGN male line.
The very useful Your Old Pal is from a RAINBOW QUEST mare and Danehill sired the Derby winner North Light from another of his daughters.
The Danzig male line has had some excellent results with mares from the AHONOORA line and Rock of Gibraltar has sired the Gr.3 winner Theann from an INDIAN RIDGE mare.
