Dunkirk’s sire Unbridled’s Song has enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with mares by Storm Cat and Storm Cat’s sire Storm Bird. Unbridled’s Song’s two stakes winners from 11 foals out of STORM BIRD mares include the Gr.1 winner Thorn Song and his seven black-type winners out of STORM CAT mares feature such notable Graded winners as Magnificent Song, Buddha, Half Ours and Noonmark.

As Dunkirk is out of a Gr.1-winning daughter of A.P. Indy, he creates 5 x 4 to SECRETARIAT with daughters of Storm Cat. There is every chance that he will prove an excellent cross for mares by Storm Cat’s son GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, who has sired four winners at Gr.1 or Gr.2 levels from Fappiano line mares, including Heatseeker. Also, Giant’s Causeway is out of a RAHY mare. Unbridled’s Song sired the Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 sire Even The Score from a RAHY mare, and Songandaprayer, another son of Unbridled’s Song, has been successful with daughters of RAHY.

Among the other sons of STORM CAT whose daughters should suit Dunkirk are HENNESSY (whose daughters have done well with A.P. Indy and Unbridled blood), TALE OF THE CAT (sire of the Gr.2 winner Alpha Kitten from an Unbridled’s Song mare), FOREST WILDCAT, FORESTRY (who himself has done well with Fappiano line mares), VAN NISTELROOY and STORMY ATLANTIC (who creates 4 x 4 to Seattle Slew).

Unbridled’s Song and his sons have also made their mark with other branches of the NORTHERN DANCER male line, which is absent from Dunkirk’s pedigree. For example, DIXIELAND BAND was the broodmare sire of Unbridled’s Song’s outstanding daughter Eight Belles. DEPUTY MINISTER has proved a popular cross with Unbridled’s Song, with the Gr.2 winner Last Song among the black-type performers, and it is interesting that two of Unbridled’s Song’s sons have already sired Graded winners from grand-daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER. Mares by AWESOME AGAIN, DEHERE, FRENCH DEPUTY, SILVER DEPUTY and TOUCH GOLD are all worth considering, with Silver Deputy and Awesome Again producing a second distant line of Mr Prospector.

NUREYEV mares had an outstanding record with Unbridled, and Unbridled’s Song sired the very successful Japanese colt Agnes Sonic from a Nureyev mare. The NIJINSKY branch of the line has had widespread success, with NIJINSKY, FRED ASTAIRE, CAERLEON, MOSCOW BALLET and SHADEED all figuring among the broodmare sires of good winners by Unbridled’s Song or his sons. Eurosilver and Take The Points are among the best examples. Unbridled, Empire Maker and Broken Vow have all sired Graded stakes winners from daughters or grand-daughters of DANZIG.

MR PROSECTOR will be back in the fifth generation of Dunkirk’s progeny, so there are no barriers to introducing more MR PROSPECTOR blood. Unbridled’s Song already has several leading winners with two lines of Mr Prospector, good examples being Zensational (4 x 4), Eight Belles (4 x 3), Forest Music (4 x 3) and Honest Man (4 x 3). The stallions involved include FORTY NINER and GONE WEST, and these two also appear in the pedigrees of stakes winners by Unbridled’s Song’s son Songandaprayer.

Daughters of KINGMAMBO, SEEKING THE GOLD, WOODMAN, MISWAKI, CARSON CITY, SMART STRIKE, GULCH and FUSAICHI PEGASUS are all likeable options, as are grand-daughters of Mr Prospector by such as LEMON DROP KID, DISTORTED HUMOR, ELUSIVE QUALITY, MR GREELEY, GRAND SLAM and THUNDER GULCH.  Mares by LEMON DROP KID could be particularly interesting, as his dam Charming Lassie is closely related to A.P. Indy, the broodmare sire of Dunkirk.

Mares with IN REALITY blood merit consideration in view of Unbridled’s Song’s success with daughters of IN REALITY, KNOWN FACT, TAYLOR’S FALLS (broodmare sire of Gr.1 winner Unbridled Elaine) and VALID APPEAL (broodmare sire of Gr.1 winner Splendid Blended). Two of Unbridled’s Song’s other Gr.1 winners, First Defence and Political Force, have two or more lines of In Reality.

MEADOWLAKE sired the dam of Unbridled’s Song’s very talented son Old Fashioned and Meadowlake’s sire HOLD YOUR PEACE is the broodmare sire of his Gr.2 winner Unbridled Energy.

In addition to Rahy, several other sons of BLUSHING GROOM have enjoyed success with Unbridled’s Song or his sons. These include MT LIVERMORE and RUNAWAY GROOM.

Mares by HALO, DEVIL’S BAG and DEVIL HIS DUE all have talented winners by either Unbridled’s Song or one of his sons. SAINT BALLADO and MORE THAN READY mares are other options from this male line.
