Asian Winners for FuPeg

26th November 2008

Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus featured at Happy Valley in Hong Kong on Wednesday evening with a winning double after both Classic Reunion (5g Fusaichi Pegasus x Rose of Danehill, by Danehill) and Super Surprise (5g Fusaichi Pegasus x Miss Marbles, by Lure) hit top form.

The John Moore trained five year-old Classic Reunion (pictured) scored his second win this season when proving too good in the 1650 metre Class Four event which he won by a length and a half.

A $200,000 purchase from the Vinery draft at the 2005 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Classic Reunion started life at the Gai Waterhouse stable where he won at Canterbury under the name of Winning Boy before transferring to Hong Kong after just two starts.

Classic Reunion is from the Group Two winning mare Rose of Danehill, who was purchased by Woodlands at the Inglis conducted Vinery Dispersal in 2005 for $500,000.

The second leg of the winning double was racked up by Super Surprise, a five year-old gelding from the David Ferraris yard ridden in dashing style by champion jockey Douglas Whyte.

Super Surprise settled back in the field on the fence and made ground quickly with the benefit of a rails run when the field turned for home, but it was only the expert horsemanship of Whyte that was able to get him out from behind a wall of horses to make a late charge, which saw him claim victory in the 1800 metre Class Four event by a short head.

Now a three-time winner, Super Surprise has won two in Hong Kong and was previously a winner at Morphettville in Australia when trained by David Hayes under the name of Time is Fleeting.

Not offered at public auction, Super Surprise is from the Lure mare Miss Marbles, a three-quarter sister to dual Group One winner Magical Miss.

Also winning Japan for Fusaichi Pegasus was the promising Friday Flight (4h Fusaichi Pegasus x Not on Friday, by At Talaq), who won his third race from six starts when scoring at Tokyo on the weekend.

Bred by Arrowfield and the Yoshida’s family’s Jungle Pocket Pty Ltd, Friday Flight fetched $80,000 at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when consigned by Arrowfield and knocked down to Katsumi Yoshida and was exported to Japan in June of that year.

Trained by Takayuki Yasuda, Friday Flight won this eight furlong event by two and a half lengths and with three wins from six starts is obviously more than useful.
