Tale of the Cat Fillies Fly
12th November 2008
Successful shuttle sire Tale of the Cat posted a winning double in Australia on Wednesday with a smart Canterbury winner in Angel’s Breath (3f Tale of the Cat x Butterfly Kisses, by Spectacular Spy) and an eye-catching juvenile debut winner at Bendigo in Tale of Love (2f Taleof the Cat x Djel D'Amour, by Dehere), a filly bred by Inglis National Sales Manager Byron Rogers. The Robert Smerdon trained Tale of Love settled off the pace and motored to the line to win the 900 metre maiden by two lengths from the Fastnet Rock first starter Fast Talker.
The time of 51.32 seconds for the 900 metres was worth noting as former brilliant mare Innovation Girl holds the race and class record at 51.22.
Bred by Byron Rogers in partnership with his father Chris, Tale of Love was sold when Rogers accepted the job at Inglis as it is against company policy for Inglis staff to breed and sell horses.
Raced by a syndicate of nine owners, Tale of Love was consigned to the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Murrulla Stud where she was purchased by Smerdon Training for $60,000.
Like recent Group One winners Rebel Raider and Forensics, the Tale of the Cat filly is from a Dehere mare in Djel D’Amour, a metropolitan winning daughter of US stakes-winner Franssica D’Amour.
Scoring at Canterbury was the Ron Quinton trained Angel’s Breath, who resumed from a spell to defeat another Tale of the Cat filly in Miss Purrdy by an impressive two and a half lengths in the 1100 metre maiden for three year-old fillies.
That was just her fourth race start, so Angel’s Breath looks a good style of filly with plenty of upside for her owners led by bloodstock agent David Lamond, who secured Angel’s Breath for $70,000 from the draft of Kilto Park at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
A half-sister to good metropolitan winner Eight Kisses, Angel’s Breath is from Butterfly Kisses, a full sister to Group Two winner Legal Agent and half-sister to the dam of Group One winner Mr Innocent.
