Moatize Into Cup

1st November 2008

Master trainer Bart Cummings has the knack of bringing horses to the boil at just the right time and showed it again at Flemington on Saturday when Moatize (4g Danehill Dancer x Shezabeel, by Zabeel) snatched a place in the Melbourne Cup with a strong finishing win in the Group Three VRC Saab Quality.

Placed in the Group One QTC Queensland Derby during the winter, Moatize outslogged the runner up Light Vision to win the 2500 metre staying test by a half head.

“He’s only had about nine runs now and been placed in most of them, he’s been very unlucky,” said Cummings.

“Today, the extra distance and the big track was right up his alley and the two miles on Tuesday will suit him even better.”

Purchased by his trainer for $105,000 from the draft of Hallmark Stud at the 2006 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Moatize is from the metropolitan winning Zabeel mare Shezabeel from the family of champion Australian sprinter Tontonan.

Moatize has won two races and placed six times from 12 starts winning in excess of $300,000 in prizemoney and is one of six Australian stakes-winners for Danehill Dancer  this season.

Moatize has drawn barrier 19 in the Melbourne Cup and will carry just 50kg with Victoria Derby winning jockey Clare Lindop in the saddle.
