Maiden Win for $1million Fupeg Filly

23rd October 2008

$1million filly Climatic (3f Fusaichi Pegasus x Monsoon Wedding, by Danehill) opened her winning account with a stylish victory at Ballarat on Thursday for Tony Santic’s Makybe Racing and Breeding Syndicate.

Having her second race start after finishing third on debut at Cheltenham on October 1, the David Hayes trained filly raced up on the pace and kicked strongly in the straight to take the 1400 metre maiden by the best part of a length.

“She was very tough today and after putting herself right in the race has fought on too strongly, although she’ll probably be better suited when she can be ridden off the pace,” said Gary Fennessy, stable foreman for David Hayes.

Purchased by renowned bloodstock agent John Foote at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Climatic was the most expensive yearling by Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus sold in 2007 and is in fact the most expensive of his yearlings sold in the Southern Hemisphere full stop.

“She’s a quality filly, well bred, and a nice filly also,” s aid winning jockey Aaron Spiteri.

“The second horse passed her at the top of the straight, but she just went home too well.”

Climatic was bred by Teeley Assets (Mr Yasseen of Redoute’s Choice fame) and consigned for sale by Coolmore Stud, who offered the filly as the very first lot into the ring on Thursday’s third session of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

She is the first foal of Group Two placed Monsoon Wedding, a full sister to champion sire and four-time Group One winner Redoute’s Choice and his Group One winning brother Platinum Scissors, also a three-quarter sister to newly retired Group Three winner Sliding Cube.

This is a family that has always been in the silk department, but in recent years has had a global surge with Northern Hemisphere champions Peeping Fawn and Rags to Riches adding further lustre to a stellar clan of gallopers tracing to super producer Best in Show.

Monsoon Wedding has since had three more fillies led by a Red Ransom two year-old called Princess Narine who was retained, followed by a pair of fillies by champion sire Encosta de Lago.
