Caulfield Success for Royal Discretion
18th October 2008
Gai Waterhouse had a red-letter day at Randwick on Saturday but she was also in the winning groove at Caulfield where classy Royal Discretion (4g Royal Academy x Discretion, by Canny Lad) scored a powerful win in the Group Three MRC Jayco Cup over 1400 metres.Unsuited when resuming from a spell on a slow track at Randwick in the Group Two AJC The Shorts, Royal Discretion showed his true colours in his Victorian debut, racing prominently throughout after crossing from a wide gate and surging strongly to the line to beat Turffontein (4h Johannesburg x Spirit of Grace, by Dr Grace) by half a length.
“His work at the Valley on Tuesday morning gave me plenty of confidence coming into today and with Nash giving him the perfect ride it all went to plan,” said Waterhouse.
“The dry track today was also important because he wasn’t happy at Randwick when he resumed on a slow track.”
A Group Three winner last season, Royal Discretion is back better than ever and boasts the overall record of six wins from 16 starts with prizemoney of $451,325,
Raced by the Bott family’s E Thoroughbred and their South African based partners, Royal Discretion was purchased by Tony Bott for $180,000 at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Attunga Stud.
A half-brother to Group Three placed mare Tactfully, Royal Discretion is the third foal of stakes-placed Canny Lad mare Discretion, a half-sister to South African stakes-winner Sunrise Silence.
Royal Discretion is one of an amazing 154 stakes-winners worldwide for Royal Academy, an outstanding shuttle sire who has made his mark in every corner of the globe and is now based permanently at Coolmore in the Hunter Valley.
Royal Academy later made it a double at Caulfield when his five year-old daughter Interfere (5m Royal Academy x Bletchwyn, by Bletchingly) won the last race on the card.
