Cowboy Cal Back in Top Form
13th October 2008
Quality colt Cowboy Cal (3c Giant’s Causeway x Texas Tammy, by Seeking the Gold) was awarded victory in the Group Three Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday following a successful protest.“My horse [Cowboy Cal] got to the lead and started waiting, and when the other horse came to him, he started fighting right back,” said winning jockey John Velazquez.
“He put his head in front of the other horse, and the other horse started leaning on him and kind of took him off balance down the lane.”
Group One placed earlier in the year when second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Cowboy Cal has a good record on turf having won three of four starts on the grass including this assignment over a mile.
A homebred for Robert and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable, the Todd Pletcher trained Cowboy Cal has the overall record of four wins and two seconds from eight starts with prizemoney of $407,708.
Cowboy Cal is from the Seeking the Gold mare Texas Tammy, a half-sister to triple Group One winner Behrens.
His win provided Giant’s Causeway with a stakes double for the weekend, his four year-old daughter Sunshine for Life capturing the Group Three Athenia Stakes on Saturday.
