Rhyno Chaser Atones

27th September 2008

Considered very unlucky when missing the kick and flying home for second to Sousa in the Group Three Newcastle Spring Stakes at his last start, Rhyno Chaser (3c Catcher in the Rye x Surfari, by Imperial Prince) atoned for that narrow loss to take the Listed AJC Dulcify Quality at Randwick on Saturday.

Tackling 1800 metres for the first time, the Kevin Moses trained Rhyno Chaser raced up on the pace and proved too strong in the run to the line holding off a late surge from Emperor Bonaparte (3g Montjeu x Endless Joy, by Centaine) to win by a half neck.

“He’s learning every day and hopefully he’ll learn some more before we back him up next week [in the Spring Champion Stakes 2000m on October 4],” said Moses.

Also a stakes-winner last season at two, the son of unheralded Danehill sire Catcher in the Rye now has the overall record of two wins and a second from seven starts with prizemoney of $176,750.

Bred and retained to race by Dr George Fromberg, Rhyno Chaser is the first living foal of the metropolitan winning Imperial Prince mare Surfari, a grand-daughter of Group Three winner Royal Seal.

A Group One placed son of Danehill, Catcher in the Rye shuttled to Coolmore Australia for two seasons and stood at the bargain basement fee of $5,500 and still stands at Coolmore Ireland at a fee of 4,000 euros.
