Group 1 double for brilliant Galileo
7th September 2008
The great Galileo took the plaudits at Leopardstown on Sunday when siring the winners of the two G1 events.
Trainer Jim Bolger’s duo of Lush Lashes (3f Galileo-Dance For Fun, by Anabaa) and New Approach (3c Galileo-Park Express, by Ahonoora) have now won a combined total of seven Group 1 races after their respective successes in the G1 Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes and G1 Tattersalls Millions Champion Stakes.
Lush Lashes’ CV also includes wins in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and last month’s G1 Yorkshire Oaks at Newmarket while New Approach was champion two-year-old after a pair of G1 victories last year and emulated his sire by winning the G1 Derby at Epsom in June.
Lush Lashes battled well under Kevin Manning to hold off the G1 winners Nahoodh and Halfway To Heaven to take the prestigious mile contest.
"We'll discuss the options we've got for her for the rest of the season. There's the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket, the Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp and the Hong Kong Cup that Alexander Goldrun won. The Breeders' Cup is also a possibility," said Bolger. "I would think she will remain in training next year."
Bolger also has big plans for New Approach after his success in the 10-furlong Champion Stakes.
"He was only doing what he had to do and Kevin (Manning) confirmed that he had bundles in the tank," added the trainer. "It was a nice, easy race for him and he should come out of it well.
"He's in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket, the Arc and also the Breeders' Cup Classic. He'll probably run in two of those three."
By winning the Irish Champion Stakes, New Approach was emulating both his dam Park Express - who was trained by Bolger to score in 1986 - and grandfather Sadler’s Wells, who won the 1984 renewal.
Both New Approach, who was bred by Seamus Burns’ Lodge Park Stud, and Lush Lashes, bred by Ann Jenkins were graduates of the 2006 Goffs Million Sale, respectively costing 430,000 euros and 80,000 euros.
