Stakes Quinella for Giant

10th August 2008

Giant’s Causeway’s winning Black Type roll continued at Saratoga on Saturday when Fairbanks and Angliana filled the quinella in the Duke of Magenta Stakes.

Not seen in the winner’s circle since capturing the Group Three Tokyo City Handicap at Santa Anita in March last year, the Todd Pletcher trained Fairbanks (5h Giant’s Causeway x Alaska Queen, by Time for a Change) thrashed the opposition in the 1 and 3/16 mile event with Angliana (6h Giant’s Causeway x Pratella, by Jade Hunter) doing best of the rest some five and three-quarter lengths in arrears back in second place.

The top priced offering at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton August Saratoga Yearling Sale when he made $1,850,000, Fairbanks has won five races and finished second four times from 17 starts earning $582,768 for his owners Team Valor International.

Fairbanks is a half-brother to another good galloper in Group Two winner Keats, his dam Alaska Queen a half-sister to Group Two winners Darn That Alarm and Strong Performance.

Fairbanks is one of 14 stakes-winners in North America this year for Giant’s Causeway joining a string of recent stakes-winners including Red Giant, Mr Maccool, Carriage Trail and Joffe’s Run.

Giant’s Causeway is the leading sire in North America by individual stakes-winners and is running fourth by overall earnings.
