Juvenile Double for Danehill Dancer
9th July 2008
Leading sire Danehill Dancer posted a metropolitan double of juvenile Australian winners on Wednesday with a debut win for First Look at Gosford and a Cheltenham victory for Super Satin.A full sister to last year’s classy juvenile stakes-winner Danehill Smile, the Chris Waller trained First Look (2f Danehill Dancer x Sly Smile, by Crafty Prospector) created a good impression when she raced handy throughout and then kicked away to win the 1200 metre fillies maiden by a length.
“She’s a well-bred filly and has improved from her trial and has a bright future. But she’s still a big leggy filly and there’s no real hurry so we’ll see how she goes,” said Waller.
Retained to race by her breeder, First Look is the eighth foal of the Crafty Prospector mare Sly Smile, who has changed hands on a number of occasions the last time at public auction in 2006 when bought by Bill Benson’s Emerald Thoroughbreds for $16,000 when in foal to Lion Heart.
Danehill Smile emerged as a potential star in late 2006 and as a result Bill Benson was able to sell Sly Smile privately for a great deal more than he paid for her and the result of that mating, a filly was snapped up by Danehill Smile’s trainer Anthony Cummings at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $70,000 when offered for sale by Emerald Thoroughbreds.
Sly Smile is now win foal to leading young sire Rock of Gibraltar.
Danehill Dancer also added his seventh Australian juvenile winner of the season when the Phillip Stokes trained colt Super Satin (2c Danehill Dancer x Mantles Princess, by Rock City) scored at Cheltenham over 1000 metres as a short priced favourite.
Resuming from a spell of 17 weeks, Super Satin zoomed home from off the pace to win by nearly two lengths.
A $340,000 purchase for Ivan Allan from the draft of Baramul Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Super Satin is from Mantles Princess, a half-sister to Group One winner Spartacus and HK superstar Johann Cruyff, both of whom are by Danehill.
