US Group Three for Sweeter Still

11th May 2008

Rock of Gibraltar’s worldwide onslaught on stakes events spread to North America at the weekend where three year-old filly Sweeter Still (3f Rock of Gibraltar x Beltisaal, by Belmez) captured the Group Three Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Run over a mile on turf, the race proved a suitable assignment for the Jeff Mullins trained Sweeter Still, who settled in third place before kicking clear in the straight and despite drifting out in the run to the line was able to hold on and win by a nose.

Bred by Anne Marie O’Brien and now raced by the David J Lanzman Racing Stable Inc and Jason Wood, Sweeter Still started her career in Ireland before transferring to North America late last year.

A stakes-winner earlier this year of the China Doll Stakes at Santa Anita, Sweeter Still boasts the overall record of three wins and a second from six starts.

She is a half-sister to Group Three winner Belle Artiste being from the Belmez mare Beltisaal and her extended family features many stakes-winners including Group One winner Danish, a daughter of Rock of Gibraltar’s champion sire Danehill.

Sweeter Still continues the outstanding run being enjoyed by Rock of Gibraltar, whose recent stakes-winning offspring include Rockwood (Australia), Fast Rock (Japan) and Kandahar Run (England).
