Fifth Aussie Winner for Catcher in the Rye
1st May 2008
Catcher in the Rye posted his fifth Australian winner at the metropolitan meeting at Wyong on Thursday when talented filly Cloudcatcher (2f Catcher in the Rye x Cloudlet, by Zephyr Zip) won on debut.Trained at Scone by Peter Bloomfield, Cloudcatcher raced handy throughout from a good draw and proved too strong for the hot favourite Packing Supreme in scoring by a length and a half in the 1100 metre maiden for juveniles.
Raced by the Middlebrook Valley Lodge Syndicate, Cloudcatcher is not without a pedigree as she is a sibling to six winners including stakes-placed Dynamic Dancer to whom she is a three-quarter sister.
Her dam Cloudlet was a brilliant racemare who won eight races – four of them as a two year-old – including the Listed Gosford Slipper, so it’s no surprise that Cloudcatcher has a good dash of the family turn of foot.
A daughter of the very good sire Zephyr Zip, Cloudlet is a full sister to Magic Millions winner Zephyrz and a half-sister to the dam of Group Two AJC Royal Sovereign Stakes winner Athelnoth.
Catcher in the Rye has been the surprise packet in the first season sire division in Australia with five winners including the stakes-winner Rhyno Chaser from just nine starters.
A Group One placed son of Danehill, Catcher in the Rye covered two smallish books of mares at Coolmore at a fee of $5,500 resulting in 132 live foals all up and is still on the Irish roster at a fee of 4,000 euros.
