French Stakes-Winner for Grand Slam
30th April 2008
The Listed Prix Sigy over six furlongs at Chantilly on Tuesday was won by classy three year-old colt War Officer (3c Grand Slam x Wonder Woman, by Storm Cat) who made it back-to-back stakes wins at his last two starts.A home bred for Joe Allen and prepared by Jean-Claude Rouget, War Officer settled off the pace and finished strongly to win by a length taking his overall record to four wins from eight starts.
"I was concerned about the ground as there had been so much rain overnight and this morning, but I was pleasantly surprised with the way he handled it and he quickened very well," said winning rider Christophe Lemaire.
"I didn't want to jump to the front from the outset, so I was able to save something for the finish. I think he'll stay further and I'm sure he'll go on to even better things."
War Officer is from the Storm Cat mare Wonder Woman, a winning daughter of classy racemare Wandering Star, a Group Two winner by Red Ransom.
War Officer is one of 41 stakes-winners worldwide for the Gone West stallion Grand Slam, a prolific sire of winners with close to 60 in the Northern Hemisphere this year including Kentucky Derby contender Visionaire.
