Encosta de Lago Stars on Day Two

21st April 2008

Encosta de Lago hit his straps on day two of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale accounting for three of the top four lots offered on Monday led by the full brother to champion filly Alinghi that made $2.2 million to the bid of Anthony Cummings for Yarraman Park.

A powerful colt, very much in the style of his sister Alinghi and also this season’s star two year-old Von Costa de Hero, Lot 277 was regarded as one of the colts of the sale and did not disappoint.

“I thought he was the pick of the colts,” said Anthony Cummings.

“His type and pedigree – it just works and he’s a lot in the mould of Alinghi.”

The colt was bought on behalf of a syndicate that seems likely to include Patinack Farm’s Nathan Tinkler.

Encosta de Lago also fired for Emirates Park, who sold Lot 257, the full brother to dual Group One winner Mnemosyne for $1.9 million to Demi O’Byrne.

Not far behind was Tyreel Stud’s Lot 160, an Encosta de Lago colt from the young Rory’s Jester stakes-winner How Funny that made $1.7 million with Tom Magnier the successful bidder.

Also fetching $1million each were Widden Stud’s filly from My Moccasin and Coolmore Stud’s colt from Liberty Rose.

Following a crackerjack day in the sale ring, Australia’s current number one sire Encosta de Lago is now averaging $591,346 with 26 of his stock having changed hands since the start of the sale.
