One quick cat

19th April 2008

One Cool Cat has been quick out of the traps with his first crop and he had another smart winner at Newbury on Friday when the Jonny Portman-trained Baycat (2c One Cool Cat-Greta D’Argent, by Great Commotion) took the five-furlong maiden.

Portman’s wife Sophie had bought the colt, bred by D Couper senior, for just 21,000 guineas at Doncaster’s October Yearling Sale and he looks a bargain buy after landing the same race captured 12 months ago by subsequent G2 Norfolk Stakes winner Winker Watson.

"I thought he was the sort of horse that could win a maiden, but more at Beverley than Newbury, but I knew he wouldn’t disgrace me," said the winning trainer.

It was a second success for One Cool Cat following the Curragh maiden victory of the James Burns-trained Cool Tarifa (2f One Cool Cat-Tarafiya, by Trempolino), who is set to run next in the G3 Swordlestown Sprint at Naas en route to Royal Ascot.
