First Stakes-Winner for Catcher in the Rye

16th April 2008

Promising young sire Catcher in the Rye posted his first Australian stakes-winner at Randwick on Wednesday when the Kevin Moses trained Rhyno Chaser (2c Catcher in the Rye x Surfari, by Imperial Prince) captured the Listed AJC TL Baillieu Handicap.

Having his second race start after a debut sixth to All American in the Group Three AJC Skyline Stakes, Rhyno Chaser showed the benefit of that experience in finishing too strongly for blue-blooded filly Polaway (2f Giant’s Causeway x Polar Success, by Success Express) to win by a length.

“Have a look at his form, he got beat three lengths by one of the Slipper favourites [All American] on debut so he had to be a massive hope,” said Moses.

“With that race experience and a good barrier today he showed he’s a horse of real promise.”

Bred and retained to race by Dr George Fromberg, Rhyno Chaser is the first living foal of the metropolitan winning Imperial Prince mare Surfari, a grand-daughter of Group Three winner Royal Seal.

Holbrook Thoroughbreds will offer the full sister to Rhyno Chaser at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale as Lot 530.

A Group One placed son of Danehill, Catcher in the Rye shuttled to Coolmore Australia for two seasons and stood at the bargain basement fee of $5,500 and still stands at Coolmore Ireland at a fee of 4,000 euros.

Rhyno Chaser is one of four Australian winners for this under-rated horse and is also his first stakes-winner worldwide.
