Giant Gem Sparkles As Maiden Winner at Santa Anita

Giant Gem (Giant's Causeway -- Tiffany's Gem, by Effervescing) took another step forward in his 3-year-old campaign for owners Blatz LP and Helen Smith, breaking his maiden at Santa Anita on Saturday. The colt, bred by La Jolla Thoroughbreds, was coming off of a second-place finish last time out in a maiden mile contest. Stretched out an extra furlong on Saturday, Giant Gem angled to the outside to pass Catastaire and win by a head at the wire.
