Encosta Cracks 80 Winners

Encosta de Lago enjoyed another powerhouse week in Australia with seven individual winners in the seven-day period ending Wednesday February 27 taking his overall tally of winners for the season to 80, well clear of all rivals.

His winners during the past week were headed by outstanding mare Princess Coup (4m Encosta de Lago x Stoneyfell Road, by Sovereign Red) , who led home a trifecta for her sire in the Group Two MRC St George Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday with classy performers Sirmione (4g Encosta de Lago x World Guide, by Defensive Play) and Douro Valley (6g Encosta de Lago x Opaque, by Lord Seymour) filling the placings behind her.

With eight individual stakes-winners to his credit Encosta de Lago is the leading sire by that parameter in Australia and is second to Zabeel on overall earnings by a closing margin of some $300,000.

Encosta de Lago has been runner-up three times and fourth once during the past four years in the race to be champion sire by earnings, so many are predicting this will be his year to go all the way.

The first Hunter Valley conceived foals of Encosta de Lago are now two year-olds and his current crop of yearlings lay claim to being his best ever, so the future looks ever so rosy for this son of Fairy King who has achieved his success the hard way.
