Derby Winner for Peintre Celebre
9th February 2008
The Group Three Tasmanian Derby was run and won at Elwick on Saturday with victory going to the maiden Victorian three year-old Mega Boss (3g Peintre Celebre x Mega Achiever, by Defensive Play), a son of former champion racehorse Peintre Celebre .Trained at Kilmore by Peter Morgan, Mega Boss was sent across to Tasmania after an encouraging last start second at Sandown on January 23 over 1800 metres, with the step up to 2200 metres seen as a big plus.
The improving young stayer justified the faith of connections when he cruised home to win by the best part of two lengths taking his prizemoney tally to $142,450.
Purchased by his trainer for $70,000 from the draft of Erinvale Thoroughbreds at the 2006 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Mega Boss was bred by Rosemont Stud and is the second foal of the well-related Defensive Play mare Mega Achiever.
A minor winner herself, Mega Achiever is a half-sister to dual Group One winner Showella (dam of stakes-winner Safwa) and Group Three winner Buster Jones.
Mega Boss is from the very last crop of Australian conceived foals by Peintre Celebre who is now permanently based at Coolmore Ireland.
Mega Boss becomes the 32nd stakes-winner worldwide for Peintre Celebre, whose best Australian based performers include the Gai Waterhouse trained Group One winners Bentley Biscuit and Mr Celebrity.
