Blue-Blood Giant Filly Makes Winning Debut
2nd February 2008
John O’Shea trained filly Polaway (2f Giant's Casueway - Polar Success, by Success Express) , the first foal of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, stepped out at the races for the first time at Rosehill on Saturday and returned a winner for owner breeder Phillip Esplin of Twin Palms Stud.An elegant highly refined near black daughter of former Coolmore shuttle sire Giant’s Causeway, Polaway showed good improvement from her only barrier trial when fourth at Randwick on January 15.
Sporting blinkers for the first time, she traveled kindly for Hugh Bowman just behind the leaders and when asked for an effort she chimed in and ran home solidly to outgun Delta Girl by a long neck with a couple of lengths back to the third place-getter.
“Some of the best horses I’ve trained have won their first race start, so her effort today is probably a good indication of her ability,’ said John O’Shea.
“We’ll poke along with her and look towards a race like the Baillieu maybe and just try and get her some Black Type.”
Winner of the 2002 Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes for the Graeme Rogerson stable, Polar Success was a modestly priced yearling purchase that was raced by a syndicate of owners earning $2.1 million before her retirement.
Sold privately to leading breeder Phillip Esplin at the conclusion of her racing career, Polar Success is now a member of the stellar band of mares that reside at Twin Palms Stud near Lochinvar.
After producing Polaway in her first season at stud, Polar Success has subsequently left two more lovely foals and was covered last spring by Encosta de Lago.
Being a daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Success Express and from the family of champions Elvstroem and Haradasun, there is every reason to think Polar Success has the makings of an outstanding broodmare.
