Impressive Encosta Winner for Lady Marion
14th November 2007
Leading sire Encosta de Lago featured at Bendigo on Wednesday when the 1400 metre maiden was won in impressive fashion by Largo Lad (3g Encosat de Lago - Lady Marion, by Danehill), a $75,000 purchase for De Burgh Farrington from the Willow Park Stud draft at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.Trained by John Ledger for the Racovolis family, Largo Lad (pictured as a yearling) settled off the pace tucked away on the fence and when a split opened up down the straight he surged through and raced right away to score by five lengths.
“He was traveling so well, all we needed was a bit of luck and when the gap opened up he was away,” said winning rider Brad Rawiller.
“John (Ledger) said before the race that he was green last start, so he’s done a good job to take a narrow run today and win like that.”
Second on debut at Wangaratta on October 28, Largo Lad looks a likely prospect to make good progress through the grades.
A half-brother to smart Adelaide galloper Woodland Jack, Largo Lad is the second foal of former very good Danehill racemare Lady Marion.
A Group Two winner of eight races and over $400,000 in prizemoney, Lady Marion was offered at the 2007 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale with an Encosta de Lago filly at foot and was snapped up by Coolmore for $840,000.
It was a three in one deal as she was also in foal to Zabeel and has since delivered a bay colt at Coolmore by the sire of Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.
