World Record Broodmare Price for Playful Act
7th November 2007
Champion sire Sadler’s Wells has had his usual successful year both on the racetrack and in the sale ring, but added a new honour this week to his phenomenal list of achievements when his daughter Playful Act set a world record price for a broodmare sold at public auction.A Group One winner of the Meon Valley Stud Mile Stakes at two and placed in the English Oaks at three, Playful Act had the right mix of pedigree and performance to generate fiscal fireworks with John Ferguson securing the magnificent mare for $US10.5 million during the opening session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
Already the dam of a filly by Giant’s Causeway, Playful Act was catalogued not in foal having missed to Kingmambo.
Bred and offered for sale by Swettenham Stud, Playful Act is a full sister to Group Two winner Percussionist and half-sister to Group Two winner Echoes in Eternity, also stakes-winners Stylelistick and Petara Bay.
Just last month Sadler’s Wells was in the news as the sire of a yearling filly from Brigid that made a world record 2.5 million guineas ($US5.3 million) at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
At age 26, Sadler’s Wells is still going strong and results like these are testament to the ongoing commercial appeal of this legendary sire.
