Group Three Win for Pillar of Hercules

20th October 2007

Leggy chestnut colt Pillar of Hercules (3c Rock of Gibraltar - Coat, by Brocco) posted his first Black Type success when showing plenty of fight to win the Group Three MRC Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday over 2000 metres.

The talented son of Rock of Gibraltar enjoyed the run of the race and accelerated off a slow tempo coming to the turn to grab a decisive lead and then held off all challengers in the run to the line to defeat Down Under Boy and Villain by a long neck

A brilliant winner at Moonee Valley on September 15, Pillar of Hercules has been seasoned in two subsequent runs when just behind the place-getters in the Group Two MVRC Stutt Stakes and Group One MRC Caulfield Guineas.

He has thrived on the competition and may possibly go on to the Group One VRC Victoria Derby in two weeks time.

“He really stuck to his guns today and did a good job,” said trainer Peter Moody.

“We can go home now and assess his condition and see how he comes through the run, we have eight or nine days to decide about the Derby.”

Pillar of Hercules has now won two races and $143,025 from six starts and was purchased by Peter Moody for $475,000 at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Bred and offered for sale by Reavill Farm, he is a three-quarter brother to stake-placed Coat’s Choice being the fourth foal of the Brocco , mare Coat, a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Catbird and Group Two winner Danbird.

Pillar of Hercules is the 23rd stakes-winner worldwide for Rock of Gibraltar who is doing an exceptional job all over the world with stakes-winners in South Africa, New Zealand and North America in the last two weeks.
