Smart Win for Jabal Tarik

29th September 2007

Beautifully bred colt Jabal Tarik (3c Rock of Gibraltar - Marooned Lady, by Marooned) made it look all too easy when he raced away to win the restricted three year-old event at Mornington on Saturday by the best part of three lengths.

The half-brother to former champion filly Special Harmony sat just behind the leaders and when asked to go forward at the top of the straight by jockey Brad Rawiller, the athletic bay responded in great style.

Jabal Tarik quickly bounded clear to win his second consecutive race, having shaken off maiden status at his previous outing at Balllarat on September 16.

“He flew the gates and we slid straight across to the box seat,” said Rawiller.

“He was just too good for them and won with something in hand.”

Prepared by Lee Freedman, Jabal Tarik is entered for the Group One VRC Victoria Derby to be run over 2500 metres on November 3, his half-sister Special Harmony having won the fillies equivalent, the Group One VRC Oaks in 2003.

An $800,000 purchase for Katsumi Yoshida from the Coolmore draft at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Jabal Tarik (pictured as a yearling) is the eighth foal of celebrated producer Marooned Lady, whose other superior offspring include Special Harmony, a winner of 10 races including three Group Ones and $1.8 million in prizemoney, as well as Group Two winners Redwoldt and King Canute.

Marooned Lady has no yearling this year after missing in 2005, but did produce a superb chestnut filly by Galileo at Coolmore Stud on September 1.
