New Group One Winner for Danehill Dancer

9th September 2007

Danehill Dancer has been riding the crest of a wave in the Northern Hemisphere this year and added a new string to his bow on Saturday when he sired his first American Group One winner in Irish filly Alexander Tango(3f Danehill Dancer - House in Wood, by Woodman), who saluted in the Garden Stakes at Belmont in New York.

A Group One contest over 1800 metres on turf for three year-old fillies, the Garden Stakes attracted a field of 10 with Alexander Tango finishing off too strongly to score by three parts of length over Bit of Whimsy and Sharp Susan.

Making her American debut after finishing second at her most recent start in the Group Two Royal Whip Stakes in Ireland on August 12, Alexander Tango settled well back before charging home down the middle of the track in an impressive performance.

“My filly was very relaxed,” said winning jockey Shaun Bridgmohan.

“She’s used to those kinds of races in Europe, where they go slow and pick it up late. I was very confident at the eighth pole. Once she got daylight, she just picked it up and ran home.”

Alexander Tango is trained by Tommy Stack for Noel O’Callaghan and has won four races and placed three times from 11 starts earning $US366,442.

Next on the agenda for her is likely to be a tilt at the Group One Belmont Flower Bowl Invitational on September 29.

Purchased for 56,000 guineas from the 2004 Tattersalls December Sale as a weanling, Alexander Tango was bred by Philip Brady and is from the Woodman mare House in Wood, a half-sister to Group Two winner Housamix and stakes-winner .

Alexander Tango is one of 54 stakes-winners worldwide sired by Danehill Dancer and becomes his sixth individual Group One winner.
