Galileo Colt Stars on Day One at Deauville
18th August 2007
A strapping bay colt by English Derby winner and leading sire Galileo from Clara Bow made 1.4 million euros to top the opening session of the 2007 Arqana Deauville Yearling Sale in France on Friday.
A half-brother to Group One Prix Jean Prat winner Turtle Bowl, the colt was bred by Berend van Dalfsen and consigned from Haras d’Etreham with leading Irish agent Demi O’Byrne the successful bidder on behalf of Coolmore.
The price was nearly double the highest paid for a horse at Deauville last year and is in fact the highest since 2002, when a record of 2 million euros was paid for a filly by Indian Ridge.
Galileo has been enjoying an outstanding year in Europe represented by a raft of top quality performers including Irish Derby hero Soldier of Fortune as well as classy types Allegretto, New Approach, Purple Moon and Mahler, etc.
He is the leading third crop sire in Europe by quite a margin and is also a clear third behind only Danehill and Montjeu on the overall leading sires list by earnings for Europe.
