Another Choisir Winner for Southern Cross
16th August 2007
Southern Cross Breeders have been in the news of late for selling the smart Bart Cummings trained Choisir filly Occurrence (3f Choisir - Happens, by Barathea) and tasted further success on Thursday when another of his offspring, Bourgogne (3f Choisir - Fionnay, by Crested Wave) , scored at Cranbourne.Having her fourth race start and stepping up sharply in distance to 1600 metres, Bourgogne cruised through the heavy conditions to win the maiden event by more than a length.
The Pat Hyland trained filly is entered for the Group One MRC Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks, the latter a race won by her half-sister Bulla Borghese in 2002.
Bred by Ashleigh Thoroughbreds and sold under the Southern Cross banner at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Bourgogne (pictured as a yearling) was secured by part-owner Robert Anderson for $380,000.
A half-sister to Bulla Borghese and stakes-placed Cresta Run, Bourgogne is the seventh foal of the unraced Crested Wave mare Fionnay , a half-sister to Group Three winner Ascona and stakes-winners St Gallen and Andermatt.
Fionnay has since produced two more fillies by Choisir including a two year-old called Chloe that has been retained to race by Senga Bissett and Ivan Woodford-Smith of Ashleigh Thoroughbreds..
