Group Three for Unbeaten Sliding Cube
11th August 2007
Exciting filly Sliding Cube (3f Rock of Gibraltar – Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) extended her unbeaten run to three wins from as many starts when she scored a brave victory in the Group Three AJC San Domenico Stakes over 1000 metres at Randwick on Saturday. The Gai Waterhouse trained filly mustered speed quickly from barrier two and held the fence to lead throughout before repelling all challengers to win by a long head in her first start for 17 weeks.
With two recent trials under her belt, Sliding Cube was ready to rock and roll, her performance giving promise of better things to come this spring.
“She’s not very big actually, quite diminutive but she’s got the heart of a lion,” said Waterhouse.
“She had to do it early, they attacked her the whole way down the straight but she just kept finding something.”
Sliding Cube has now won $148,250 in prizemoney and will be programmed to contest races in the upcoming Princess Series for fillies culminating with the Group One AJC Flight Stakes at Randwick over 1600 metres on October 6.
Bred and retained to race by Mr Yaseen, whose horses compete under the ownership of Teeley Assets, Sliding Cube is thoroughbred royalty being a three-quarter sister to champion sire Redoute’s Choice and his Group One winning brother Platinum Scissors.
Her dam Shantha’s Choice traces to legendary American broodmare Best in Show, whose headline making descendants include champion Northern Hemisphere fillies Rags to Riches (America) and Peeping Fawn (Europe).
Shantha’s Choice produced a colt by Encosta de Lago last spring and is now due to foal to him again.
