Galileo enjoys a Glorious Goodwood
7th August 2007
Allegretto, trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Cheveley Park Stud, turned in a powerful staying performance to win the two-mile event by half a length from Veracity to land her third victory at G2 level, having won the Lancashire Oaks at three and the Henry II Stakes at Sandown in May.Allegretto, bred by Kirsten Rausing and Airlie Stud's Sonia Rogers, was purchased for 415,000 guineas at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is the first foal of the G3-winning Caerleon mare Alleluia, a half-sister to G2 winner Last Second from the immediate family of G1 winners Alborada, Yesterday and Quarter Moon.
"She's such a tough, game filly," said Cheveley Park Stud's managing director Chris Richardson. "After Ascot we thought that if she could come here and win that would be her swansong - she could come back to the stud - but we will have to give it some thought. She has a fantastic pedigree and is a lovely mare for the future."
Meanwhile Purple Moon (4g Galileo-Vanishing Prairie, by Alysheba)- a 550,000 euros yearling who sold for 440,000 guineas as a horse in training last year - could bid to land Australia's most-famous prize after winning for Galileo at Goodwood on Friday.
Craig Bennett's four-year-old, who was bred by Gestut Shohrenhof and is trained by Luca Cumani, was a hugely-impressive winner of the Listed Coutts Glorious Stakes.
"The plan could be the G3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes next," said Cumani. "I know Craig is keen on the Melbourne Cup, so if he stays keen we will take that route, going for the Caulfield Cup first."
