1 - 2 for Galileo in Tyros S.

30th July 2007

We mentioned here a couple of weeks ago that the Jim Bolger-trained Galileo juvenile New Approach (2c Galileo-Park Express by Ahonoora) might be a colt to keep an eye on after his Curragh maiden success.

And the 430,000 euros yearling, bred by Seamus Burns' Lodge Park Stud, went into even more notebooks on Saturday night when leading home an impressive 1-2 for Galileo in the G3 Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown when scoring by two lengths from Lady O'Reilly's home-bred Brazilian Star (2g Galileo-Braziliz by Kingmambo).

What makes New Approach's efforts even more notable is that the two races he has won so far were captured 12 months ago by another Bolger-trained Galileo colt, none other than Teofilo, who went on to be crowned champion two-year-old after two subsequent G1 wins.

Such was the impression created by New Approach on Saturday night that he is as short as 14/1 for next year's G1 2,000 Guineas and 16/1 for the G1 Epsom Derby after the victory.

"He's a proper horse. We will go for the G2 Futurity Stakes with him next and we'll see after that," said Bolger. Possible future targets include the G1 National Stakes, which was also won by Teofilo.

Galileo also had another stakes winner in Germany on Sunday when Gestut Park Wiedingen's home-bred Namibia (3f Galileo-Narooma by Silver Hawk) captured the Listed Dallmayr Coupe in Munich.

Indeed Galileo's already-illustrious pedigree gained a further boost on Saturday when his five-year-old Giant's Causeway half-sister My Typhoon (5m Giant's Causeway-Urban Sea by Miswaki), a 1.8 million gns foal, landed the G1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga.

Galileo and My Typhoon's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning dam Urban Sea has also produced G1 winner Black Sam Bellamy, G3 scorers Urban Ocean and All Too Beautiful as well as stakes-winner Melikah and this season's Group-placed three year-old Cherry Hinton.

My Typhoon is one of 30 stakes-winners worldwide for her sire Giant's Causeway and is his sixth G1 winner joining Shamardal, Aragorn, First Samurai, Maids Causeway, Footstepsinthesand. Giant's Causeway is currently the third leading sire in North America with nine stakes winners including Canadian Classic winner Mike Fox and progeny earnings in excess of $5million.
