Hawk Wing's Sensational July
23rd July 2007
Hawk Wing was a World Champion as a racehorse and - judging by the performances of his first crop in July alone - he is destined to become something out of the ordinary as a stallion.
On Wednesday he had a first stakes success when the Tommy Stack-trained filly Triskel (2f Hawk Wing-Pat Or Else by Alzao), bred by Matthews Breeding and Racing, captured the Listed Silver Flash Stakes over seven furlongs at Leopardstown.
She was always handy and kicked away in the concluding stages to win by two lengths in an encouraging display that has prompted connections to target her at events such as the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in September and the Goffs Million for fillies. Triskel was purchased for 85,000 euros by Fozzy Stack from the draft of Yeomanstown Stud at the 2006 Goffs Million Yearling Sale.
Less than an hour after Triskel's win, the Richard Hannon-trained Maybe I Will (2f Hawk Wing-Canterbury Lace, by Danehill) landed a seven-furlong maiden at Kempton. Bred by Tony Hirschfeld's Cheval Court Stud in Surrey, Maybe I Will is out of Canterbury Lace, a full-sister to both this season's G1 Irish Derby second Alexander Of Hales and smart juvenile Chevalier. She is also a half-sister to G1 1,000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters.
On Friday evening, Let Us Prey (2c Hawk Wing-Entail by Riverman) - who had finished fourth in the G2 July Stakes at Newmarket a week earlier - justified odds-on favouritism to land a six-furlong Pontefract maiden for trainer Neville Callaghan. The winner, who was bred by Dermot and Perle O'Rourke's Newmarket-based Plantation Stud, scored by a very easy length and a quarter and looks sure to go on to bigger things.
Meanwhile on Saturday night at Tipperary, the Dermot Weld-trained Soaring Falcon (2c Hawk Wing-Schust Madame by Second Set), bred by Vanessa Hutch, was a facile two-length nursery winner. He is likely to reappear at the Galway Festival next week.
