First Stakes-Winner for Hawk Wing

19th July 2007

Former star racehorse Hawk Wing was represented by his first stakes-winner in Ireland on Wednesday when two year-old filly Triskel (2f Hawk Wing - Pat or Else, by Alzao) captured the Listed Silver Flash Stakes over seven furlongs at Leopardstown.

The Tommy Stack trained filly was having her third run after failing on her debut at Naas and then improving for second at Gowran Park on July 8.

She was always handy and kicked away over the concluding stages to win by two lengths in an encouraging display that will have her aimed towards races such as the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes in September and the rich Goffs Million for fillies.

“We thought she’d run well first time at Naas, but she scoped dirty afterwards and took a bit of time to get right,” said assistant trainer Fozzy Stack.

“She got a bit tired at Gowran last time and has obviously improved for that run.”

Triskel (pictured as a yearling) was purchased for 85,000 euros by Fozzy Stack from the draft of Yeomanstown Stud at the 2006 Goffs Million Yearling Sale.

One of eight European first crop winner for Hawk Wing, Triskel has plenty of depth to her female pedigree being from the Alzao mare Pat or Else, a half-sister to dual Group One winners Classic Cliché and My Emma.

It was less than an hour later that Hawk Wing had his ninth first-crop winner when the Richard Hannon-trained Maybe I Will (2f Hawk Wing-Canterbury Lace, by Danehill) landed a seven-furlong maiden at Kempton.

Bred by Tony Hirschfeld's Cheval Court Stud in Surrey, Maybe I Will is out of Canterbury Lace, a full-sister to both this season's G1 Irish Derby second Alexander Of Hales and smart juvenile Chevalier. She is also a half-sister to G1 1,000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters.
