More successes for flying Hawk Wing
9th July 2007
Hawk Wing’s purple patch continues with recent impressive first-crop winners in Japan and Italy. In fact Hawk Wing’s last six runners have ALL finished 1st or 2nd.
In a 13.4 million yen newcomers’ event at Hanshin in Japan, Barking Wolf (2c Hawk Wing-Forest Call by Wolfhound) made an impressive winning debut over seven furlongs for trainer Takayuki Yasuda on Saturday.
Bred by Duncan McGregor, Barking Wolf realised 70,000 guineas as a foal at Tattersalls before being bought by agent Nobutaka Tada for 250,000 guineas as a yearling.
In Naples on Thursday, Pigna (2f Hawk Wing-Shooter Guest by Spectrum), bred by Curtasse SNC, scored by two lengths on her debut and looks destined for much bigger things.
These latest success followed hots on the heels of victories for Sir Mark Prescott’s Wolverhampton maiden winner Phoenix Flight (2c Hawk Wing-Firecrest by Darshaan), bred by Airlie Stud and Sir Thomas Pilkington, and Montaquila (2c Hawk Wing-Intellectuelle by Caerleon), who was bred by Ridgecourt Stud and won a Newcastle novices’ event for trainer Howard Johnson.
A couple of names to note are Mette Campbell-Andenaes’ home-bred Lille Ida (2f Hawk Wing-Fur Will Fly by Petong), who finished second on her debut for trainer Marcus Tregoning at Lingfield recently and the Tommy Stack-trained Triskel (2f Hawk Wing-Pat Or Else by Alzao), bred by Matthews Breeding and Racing, who came second at Gowran Park on Sunday.
All eyes will be on Newmarket’s July Meeting this week and Hawk Wing could have a couple of smart representatives on show there.
Let Us Prey (2c Hawk Wing-Entail by Riverman), bred by Plantation Stud and trained by Neville Callaghan, finished an eye-catching third on his debut at Newmarket in May and could line up in either a novices’ event on Thursday or the G2 Superlative Stakes on Friday.
Other G2 Superlative Stakes entries include the unlucky Listed Chesham Stakes third Feared In Flight (2c Hawk Wing-Solar Crystal by Alzao), trained by Barry Hills and bred by T W Bloodstock, and Montaquila.
