Hawk Wing colt is impressive novice winner
29th June 2007
First-crop Hawk Wing colt Montaquila (2c Hawk Wing-Intellectuelle by Caerleon) readily saw off a field of previous winners to land a Newcastle novices’ event on Thursday for trainer Howard Johnson.
Bred by Ridgecourt Stud, the 75,000gns yearling scored by two and a half lengths under jockey Tom Eaves.
"I knew he'd get further, which is why I kicked on quite early," said Eaves."He had the best form going into the race on his first run, so he was entitled to win as he did."
Hawk Wing came close to a Royal Ascot winner on Saturday when Feared In Flight (2c Hawk Wing-Solar Crystal by Alzao), bred by T W Bloodstock, met no luck in running in the Listed Chesham Stakes when beaten two necks into third. Trainer Barry Hills is targeting the Goffs Million with the Hawk Wing colt, who had beaten Montaquila first time out at York.
