Two State Juvenile Double for Tale of the Cat
27th June 2007
Tale of the Cat posted his eight and ninth individual Australian two year-old winners this season with a two state metropolitan double in Sydney and Melbourne courtesy of Cat Flap (2f Tale of the Cat - Wadderwin, by Danewin) and Hawas (2f Tale of the Cat - Tempting Beauty, by Flying Spur).A striking liver chestnut with four white feet, the Graeme Rogerson trained Cat Flap put her best foot forward at Canterbury to beat the colts and geldings and claim her first win in the restricted event for juveniles over 1100 metres.
Ridden by apprentice jockey Peter Wells, Cat Flap took a sit off the pace and accelerated in good style to win by a length at her third race start.
“She led at her last two runs and raced a bit too keenly, but she settled well today and really appreciated that, so was able to find the line well,” said Wells.
Trainer Graeme Rogerson was also full of praise for Cat Flap and indicated she would now spell and return a better filly in her next preparation.
Bred and offered for sale by Stratheden Stud, Cat Flap is by Tale of the Cat from the Danewin mare Wadderwin and fetched $135,000 when secured by Graeme Rogerson at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
She is the first foal of Wadderwin, a daughter of stakes-placed Marscay mare Nawadder who is in turn out of the former slick juvenile Purpose, a Group Three winner of eight races, five of them at two.
The Lee Freedman trained filly Hawas opened her account with an easy victory in the open juvenile fillies event over 1200 metres at Seymour, strolling clear to win by nearly two lengths.
A homebred for Gooree Stud, from the Flying Spur mare Tempting Beauty, Hawas has shown steady improvement at each run this time in and was overdue for a win.
Interestingly, both Hawas and Cat Flap are bred on the same cross, being from mares by sons of Danehill.
Coolmore based Tale of the Cat has now had 9 Australian juvenile winners including Group Three winner Bantry Bay from his first Australian conceived foal crop, plus New Zealand based stakes-winner El Cuento.
He returns to Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $33,000.
